When I bought my 04 used it had a lock on the spare and no key tool to be found. We were able to pop it off with two pry bars by going through the spare tire. It was a bitch to get off though. Then I just used the hook to lower and raise the spare.

That reminds me I've never taking my spare down in the 2 years I owned it.

    Should I be greasing it?

Every once in awhile I add air to it but I get it done without dropping.

I haven't greased mine, but I do lower it every know and then to keep it from wanting to freeze up or something.
