Not really sure how to title this one. Tuesday is my dads birthday, he will be 48. Wanna do something cool for him since I never really do. Here's the catch
    - I am pretty much broke
    - He lives an hour away
    - He is loaded and can afford anything he ever needs, impossible to shop for the guy

I was planning on driving down tuesday and showing up at his work and surprising him, but I don't know after that. I mean he goes to lunch everyday already so that wouldn't be very fun for him.

Any ideas would be much appreciated guys!

Just spend time with him man. My pops, ever since I left home, always just enjoys talkin or doing something together. Doesn't matter what. Maybe something he would remember it by like a trinket of an inside joke or memory. Dads just wanna know their son looks up to them. Money don't mean jack next to that

I would still take him out for lunch. While he does it every day, he doesn't do it every day with you. Then I'd just do what everyone else has said and have some quality time with him. If he's loaded like you say he is, he won't want anything tangible, gift like, if you know what I mean.

    Take him off roading ;)

That is what I would do, as I sit in a simar boat

maybe talk to him and say hey a have this whole day set aside for you would like to do anything. the quality time would be the most precious gift. if he declines or sets another date then thats ok too the thought and effort is what counts. money isn't everything. my 2 from a sons prospective.

Just spend time with him. Go to a movie, play minigolf, bar-b-q some steaks and drink if you guys drink. My dad died unexpectedly when I was 26, I'd give anything just to sit and talk with him for an hour...

Like everyone else said just go hang out with him. Since I've moved out I can tell that my dad has missed me, as I do to him. Even when he has to go to work at 4am he will wake up and Skype with me and my mom when I get off work at 10. A little lunch or something will go a long way. I took my dad to lunch at Hooters just me and him last weekend and picked up the bill he was happy with that, especially a free meal.
