You don't need to live/work in a bad area for crime to occur. It would be ignorant to think nothing can happen to you anywhere.

I know that, not saying that at all. Have you ever had to or know anyone that had a situation that they needed a gun?

    Thanks for your input.

Ask her how she'd feel if the only gun in the house was being carried by a criminal that breaks in.

    Look at my last post.

I'm going to guess that you rely on AAA for flats and the dealership to do your service?

Not trying to be a dick, you can do as you please, but I don't want to have to rely on anyone if I'm capable. I take responsibility for my safety and for my families.

Wow, this thread really blew up after i left work yesterday. Thanks for all the great info, and some of the amusing comments. I'm one that wants the decision to be made by both of us. I'm not sure if we have any ranges by us that rent guns. The good thing is that the doctor she works with has his own shooting range and just about any gun you can think of. I think i will talk to him about getting us out there to shoot some weapons and get her comfortable with it.

My wife could have used one when an intruder broke into our house and assaulted her on a Saturday at 10 AM AND I live in a relatively low crime area. Criminals don't care.

To OP, get a gun and teach her how to use it. If she is 100% against it, get a good alarm system and get to know your neighbors well.

Well I'm sorry to hear that happened to your wife. does she have a gun now? Again I'm not against guns in anyway. Just curious to the mindset of wanting to carry one all the time.

And I'm just trying to have a civil conversation about it too. Not trying to piss people off.

Someone post that letter that ex marine wrote about how carrying a gun is more civil, it takes someones ability to force you (uncivil) to do anything out of the question, It makes them have to use reason and nonviolent methods.

from someone that owns 2 glock 10mm's yeah they are awesome, that being said probably not a very good weapon to have with the intent of you wife shooting it, my g/f's shot mine and she did not like the 10mm's recoil, 9mm is the best option and that's what sits beside my bed at night

you bringing a knife to a gun fight? or do you plan on using words to combat their bullets?

maybe, maybe not. maybe a couple of punks are accros the street talking shit to your wife and are walking your way and one has a knife. Without a means to defend yourself you are either probably gonna run and hope you can evade them or try and fight them while your wife dials 911. (cops show up to take notes and clean up the mess left behind)
If your carrying you have the option to give them something to think about. Criminals want easy targets to prey on, not armed citizens.

All this talk about guns just made me order one of these:D

I had the same issue with my wife. I started with a .22lr rifle and let her get used to shooting it. She had fun and enjoyed it, so i bought her one too. Then i got a .22lr pistol and got her going on that. Now i have a XD9, She was against getting something bigger at first. but after some training and calm rational discussion. It is now located in the bedroom loaded and ready to go at all times (we do not have kids).

Good post, Seth. Ive noticed that most of the people that are scared or unsure about them know nothing about them and once they start shooting they actually really enjoy it.

Ive taken my wife a few times and she says she really likes it.

From my experience anytime somebody that is anti gun it's because they have never been educated on how to use a gun. I love taking new shooters out and introduce them to firearms. Every time the opinion changes. Of course start small with a .22 and work up to larger guns.

Obviously it was more involved.. I didn't just take her to the range and do most of it for her. We went over the basics of operation at home and the basics of safety, she practiced the mechanics a bit. I even showed her how to take it apart and clean it. Just basically got her used to handling the rifle first. Then took her to the range. she loaded the mags herself and did everything herself. Did the same thing with the 22 Pistol and she has fun shooting it. When i got the 9mm it was a little more difficult, but i am working on the same things. We have even practiced and discussed the mechanics of what to do if someone comes in the home and she needs to use it.
