Why would you do that? I've been living with this issue for a year and a half. The dealer has "fixed it" by replacing the front brakes, then the rear. Each time it seemed better, but over time the vibration would return. I recently cleaned and lubed the rear brakes and retorqued the wheels. It seemed better for a while and now it's coming back.

Imo, its not the brakes. Appears to be in the torque converter.

Does anyone have this issue with just noise and not vibration? I get a bad squealing noise that goes with the rotation, but no vibration. Definitely coming from my right rear drum...I popped off the cover and everything looks fine in there, just a bit dusty.

"Squealing" can just be dirt or grease on the shoes and drums. Which you can clean with brake clean and a clean rag. Sometimes shoes can get a glaze on them from overheating. You can sand them a little to clean them up. Also, from my experience, people often overlook that drum brakes have contact points where the shoes ride on the backplate that need lubrication.

I cleaned up the drum with brake cleaner before I put it all back together. It makes the noise even when my foot is off the brake...i'll try to upload a vid later.

Well, don't actually slam the brakes on, but stopping in reverse should adjust the brake shoes. Back up slow and use the parking brake to stop a few times. Just make sure of what is behind you of course. As the late Mitch Hedberg said "I drove 10 miles with the emergency brake on. That don't say much for me, however, it says less for the emergency brake."

I’m going to make all you guys really go mad.... put 400 to 500 pounds in the box. Then test drive. Keeping close attention to the shudder while braking. Yup! It’s not there. It’s gone. Smooth.

    cheers! :)

Some of us knew this already. As little as 200lb at the rear of the bed completely eliminates the 25-15mph washboard shudder in my truck.

    UPDATE:

Toyota FINALLY admitted to me that they know this is an issue, but can't fix it because it is to some degree, inherent in the design. Field Technician and Service Manager are on record as "observing the exact driving characteristics customer described and experienced previously. No repair recommended at this time as characteristic also noted in new model 2021 on dealer lot." basically:

3k mi - 30-15mph shudder. weight in bed eliminates it. vibe is worse with dive on decel- driveline angle related?

7k mi - vibe is way worse, both rear axles and drums replaced by toyota - vibes gone

11k mi - vibe is back, toyota "cant feel it"

12.5k miles - f*ck em, I swap 5100's for stock 4600's up front, set to 1.1" lift - vibes almost totally gone.

12.5-18k - vibes are very slowly getting more noticeable

19k mi - i make a point to get a toyota field tech in my truck, and after 1 month and 3 dealer visits, I finally have the "yup, this shit aint right- but it aint wrong enough for us to fix again, yet. If it gets worse, regardless of your warranty status, bring it in and we will goodwill any repairs related to vibration/axles/drums/driveline. We have no concerns about the 5100's or Spidertax adapters relating to the issue." Whew.

So, shit happens. Toyota knows this is happening but isnt swapping axles until its bad.

From my experience, the ~25-15mph shake is reduced by weight in bed and/or lifting the front of the truck. 1.1" wasnt quite enough for mine, may go to 1.55 or throw some 1/4 spacers in there and see how she feels.

Damn reading 32 pages of this thread is bumming me out. I just got a 2021 TRD PRO and have the shaking during highway speeds. started noticing it right away at mile 5 but thought maybe it was normal for tacos. I had a friend of mine test ride mine since he has a 2020 offroad and he said nope mine does not do that and I drove his truck he was right it is not normal. I read up on how to bed the pads and tried that but it is not working. I made an appointment at the dealership. Will keep this thread updated.

I just purchased a 2022 SR Tacoma with a factory installed lift. The truck shakes when stopping. I notice it more when stopping from higher speeds. It has 1800 miles on it and I’m taking it to the dealer on Saturday. Has anyone found a fix for this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!

Only really notice vibration when lightly braking right around 40-45mph. It's so consistent that I will be stopping for a light, feel the truck start to shake, look at the speedometer and see the needle passing through the 40-40 range.

Seems to be getting worse over time.

I made a post sometime in 2019 where I described my experience with the vibrations. Long story short, my drum brakes were completely replaced. Warped drum enclosures caused the vibration/jumpy feeling when braking.
Initially, Toyota had tried other things but this is what ultimately fixed the problem. About 30K miles later, no issues. Hope that helps.

Same experience as Genypig on my 2018 TRD Sport. Within first 20K km if I remember correctly.

First service appt, dealer machined a front rotor. Brough back and then they replaced both rear drums. 10K km later they replaced brake drums again. 2 years later, and another 50k KM, it's been fine. Service guy said it wasn't a common issue. Parts guy laughed when I asked him if he's been going through brake drums. He confirmed that and said it's almost like Toyota had a bad batch of drums.

You'd think Toyota would have that sorted by now.
