Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head would be the position of the shift collar on the shift rail isn't holding if it's popping out of high. NwF should Def be able to help diagnose though.

I can't think of anything else that could help either. Did put the thrusht washer in? The thin one not the one that goes with the thrust bearing. I could see if there was too much end play that the whole assembly could move just enough to kick it out of gear.

Hopefully NWF can get you helped out.

Yep, I remember that one, it's in there.

I'll report back once I talk to NWF

Tyer at NWF has been emailing me. Super helpful and detailed messages. Looks like what I am dealing with is unusual and probably linked to worn parts from the donor. If I missed the thrust washer on the input that would be a likely culprit too. Unfortunately, I wont be able to tear it down for another week or more due to work.

EDIT: Thanks to NWF for a successful fix

I have an automatic 1st gen 2004. If I run an ecocrawler and an np205, anyone know what I’d do with the VSS at the back of the T case? can’t figure out how I’d change the np205 to a Toyota 4 pulse (there are folks that sell some electric vss kits but that’s to a gm 30 pulse or something)

^^^ Not sure what that is telling me. The 2nd Gen Thread that was linked shows an error when I go to it. And I was curious as to if those that have done the install have additional vids aside from the one I posted. Not per say looking to hear from the vendor themselves.

IIRC it was combined with this one to avoid the redundant threads.

the year of the donor case doesn't actually matter right? You're just using the guts from the inside? For those that did this do you take the gears from the case and send those in, and get your built crawl box with adapter plates back? Or do you get the box and build it yourself with your donor gears

You get the parts and build it yourself.

Year doesn't really matter, but it should be a j-shift, or a hybrid push-button 1st gen case. The newer cases with electric high-low shifting require several other parts and don't really make sense to use for the swap when you can get a j-shift case for like $150.

This never really became a dedicated thread for NWF. Most of the guys who installed one have been chatting about it in the general crawlbox thread. They started shipping late 2021 early 2022, so you can probably skip several years of bullshit and start there if you're looking for installation specific details, but it's going to be hot garbage to search through.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/official-crawlbox-bs-thread.422186/

What specifically are you curious about / want to see? I took a fair amount of pictures during my build / installation process in my build thread.

Thanks for the info! And yep, I've been in that thread too (lots of intel!).

As for what I wanted to see, just a few more vids of the NWF in particular in action. I know theoretically they should all perform the similar. But both Trail-Gear, and Marlin, have a few videos on the trail showing performance. And dropping a few K on an product, I just want as much data as possible. Not a must, just preference.

    Hey all -

Has anyone successfully used the NWF trident shifter in a 2nd gen auto? Would love to see how you made it work.

All done, still need to finish the t-case skid plate. And it's still a little rough with the shift boot.

Tyler with NWF has been a huge help with some issues I have been having. I am sure it's solved now.

Glad you got it going! What was the resolve with the popping out of gear issue you had?

I got a prototype shift detent piece. It's the thing the shifter fork pushes against. It's got a more aggressive ramp for the ball bearing to ride against. Much more positive detent, but still easy to shift. I've not had many miles on it yet, but from the symptoms before this should work well.

I'm confident it will fix the issue.

Mar 2024 update - This did indeed fix the issue.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
Is this with your stock TC behind the eco-crawler? I recently bought a FJC TC and figuring all the steps to get that in the truck and using my stock TC as the donor.

Yes, my stock TC is behind.

Having the right donor for the Ecocrawler is important. You really need a j-shift donor. I actually have a set of spare donor parts, the input housing is not perfect though.
