Posted this in the suspension forum and got no reply.

I know some in here are pretty knowledgeable with this stuff, so I figured I'd ask the question here too. I'm not sold on doing anything, but if this is basically a plug and play mod...it might not make a bad mod to the truck.

Yes, I know ultimately a real suspension is the only way to go...but in the meantime.

Graydon, if it was me and I wanted to get new UCA's I would go with the Camburg ball joint version. Low to no maintenance and keeps alignments pretty simple.

Rob's response is spot on. I'd get the 5100s if the goal is to regain some of the height that you lost because of the ARB. They have a great warranty, you won't blow them out. You can always get new springs down the road but the 5100s in the mean time isn't a bad option.

All that being said, consider this. When you put new springs on, you'll spend money on the install and an alignment. If you think you'll want to go taller shortly afterwards, wait and piece together the lift and do it all at once. In the long run, it's cheaper since you're not paying to do things twice.

True but if he's doing it himself and get a lifetime alignment warranty then he only pays for the upgrade(s) IF he feels like you need it. Just some options

I mean, yes, I ultimately would love to go the full OME route, but the problem really is that to run 885/886 it's proper to get UCAs. Those are really a breaking point with me as far as cost. I know they're ~$500 which isn't a lot, but it is. My other concern is where I don't plan on doing a rear lift at the moment, I don't want a weird looking truck.

I would probably swap the suspension pieces myself, so I'd be on the hook for a $80 alignment.

My only concern outside of potentially damaging the new pieces with the bumper weight (which a warranty should solve) is Toyota trying to deny a claim. Small chance, but you never know.

I've had a lot of combinations of suspenion components in my truck over the years .
5100s are a good shock on the cheap . I have them in mine now . If you add a leaf pack down the road . Just bump them up to 2.5 . Or add a spring like rob said .

You don't need aftermarket uca to lift your truck .

I have couple extra leafs right now collection dust since I removed them a few week back. If anyone is interested in them. Hard to say what they would net you for height but I lost an inch in the rear after removing them from my 6 leaf packs. 2 leafs total. The leafs are from a Chevy one ton pack. If any one is interested in them pm me. I can send pics.

You won't damage anything with 5100s. If you want to stay lower with your lift, you could consider eibach coils. They are stiffer than stock so they'd handle the ARB bumper and wouldn't lift you to the point where you'd need new ucas.

For what it sounds like you're trying to do though, which is just level the truck with the new weight up front, 5100s are a great option.
X2, unless you go up to a full 3 inches. Even then, it's just for alignment, you don't 'need' them.

Right, but isn't the 885/886 borderline? If I was doing the whole nine (Dakars/885 or 886 and matching shocks), I'd do the UCAs just for the extra piece of mind.

I mean, realistically, I'm probably a year out from even considering this, but it's just one of those things that I'm starting to think about.

I have a great tendency to decide on automotive purchases, wait a year, buy the item, wait another year and then install.

Blah...if there's no real drawbacks from doing this install, might as well do it then. (5100s)

    EDIT:

Exactly. I'd just like to regain what I lost in the bumper, and then maybe a little more to make it sit level. I've got an oil change coming up so I may ask about the TSB leafs for laughs (don't need em, but 300 lbs of lime two weeks ago made it squat more than I had expected).

No problem. Any rush on them? Or just whenever we are around in each others area?

Right now I have 5100s at 2.5 and Dakar leaf packs . Stock uppers no issues .
Adding a different spring doesn't make you need ucas . 885/886 , eibach or any other brand .

Only reason for needing ucas is because you can't get a good alignment . So I'd hold off on them till you lift it 2 years from now :)

I ran 3.5" of lift on stock UCA's. Only reason I went aftermarket was I got an incredible deal on some LR UCA's

I have the 885 with the OME shocks, before that I was running 5100's set at 2.5" all with the stock UCA's. I have a set of LR's that I got used but never used because they need new bushings but never really felt like I needed them.

    Probably the second one...LOL
