I agree with you in general, but the 4Runner up here is ridiculously over priced. They aren't common on the lot because demand is good for them in the area and supply is low so trying to haggle is extremely hard. I'm hoping we will find one that the dealership will move a bit on price, but right now it's hard to swallow 47K for a 4Runner when I could buy a F150 FX4 loaded up for the kind of pricing. If she wants it we will probably get it, but when GM offered us a Colorado Z71 for 38K taxes in she stopped talking about how much she likes the 4Runner. Maybe the 3rd gen Tacoma can sway her back.

My guess is that the 3.5l will have 305hp and 278tq. Also the 2GR-FSE has been on Wards 10 best engines few times. Its really not a bad engine. Im sure Toyota has done good R&D.

    It's a Gen2 v3.0 to me... kind of like the '94 Gen1 compared to '01 Gen1 - same cab, different faces.

My only reasoning behind not calling it a 3rd gen is simple. Same cab = same frame = same or similar suspension, brakes, axles, composite bed even.

It's a refresh. It got a new engine and new body panels. It's a much larger refresh than the 2012 facelift. But it's a refresh at it's core.

Which is fun, because if my engine ever goes out I think a 3.5L swap with a 2016 ECU, 2016 dash and interior pieces will be a really fun project!

Don't forget a new transmission and I've heard a new rear differential as well. So you'd be swapping a new differential, transmission, and engine in, at the minimum, if you really wanted to update. There's no guarantees on how they installed the interiors will use the same mounting spots as the old stuff. That sounds more like a mission than a project lol. Kind of like the guys who put 4WD into there Prerunners.

Generation 2.5 or 3.0, get in this truck and I bet I won't feel like your current truck. A lot was changed and added.

Yeah, there's no guarantee at all, but a fun idea.

I did forget about the new tranny. I'm thinking though once you get past the tranny it'll likely be mounted to the same transfer case and I'd put money down that it's using the same axle housings and shafts.

Mechanically there's a lot of carry-over on these trucks. Visually they're very different, but the cab alone tells a tale of an all-too familiar skeleton underneath.

Some people cannot be pleased. We want a new Tacoma. Toyota gives you a new Tacoma and you complain.

Sure no diesel. No refrigerated cup holders.

Tacoma is the iPhone of the industry. Every year very slightly modified.

    Tacoma is what it is.

    I wanted a 4 cylinder turbo. Didn't get it.

Yup. There will be some similarities for sure. I wouldn't count on the transfer case since I think Toyota usually develops there transmissions and transfer cases together, so a new transfer case is not out of the question. Also Toyota is reinforcing the frame so there will likely be minor changes that might be significant enough to limit part swapping without modifications.

'Logic'. We don't even have numbers for the engines and literally no one here except maybe one or two Toyota lurkers have even been within 10 feet of this new Tacoma.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.

Gen 1 Tacoma was as brand new of an engine 4cyl as toyota has ever done in a truck. V6 was heavily modified from the 89-95.

The R series spanned from the begining-95 in toyota pickups and it had many "new" versions, some more closely related than others. Including a Turbo gas model, which was a bandaid because the V6 was not ready. They are cool but they had a drawback as a truck engine.

Gen 2 got a new to the Tacoma engine v6, and a brand new 4cyl 2.7 2TR FE. Based off of the previous 2.7 3RZ FE but shares basically nothing. Same can be said for the 2.7 3RZ FE being based off the 22RE 2.4 in the pickup.

The good thing Toyota does, is they take what they know is good and they improve and continue. Very rarely do they revolutionize all at once, so you get something likely to be reliable with a few bugs. VS chevy, or any other company that introduce new and blingy shit every time the last trial fails to win you over.

Should the Tacoma have a new update? more often? yes and probably yes.. but i don't think its just thier pocket book that dictates the slow moving. They also have moved more and more production to the US which has shown more than once to shown to not produce the same quality as Japan did. Great for our needed American jobs, but is it great overall for the product? At least they have stood behind the product throught the good and bad!

As for the new 2016 Tacoma not having a diesel, everything I have read points to Toyota releasing their diesel in the 2017 model. This way they can ensure it has more HP and torque than the one Chevy or anyone else is offering so they can keep the top spot in the small truck segment. IMHO.

I hope that Toyota has addressed the frame rust issue for the new model but if not it's not that expensive to fix that with undercoating and rust prevention on our own, even though it should be done and the manufacture level. Just have to wait and see.

We shall see. That would be nice. I would go for a diesel Tacoma. I for one do in fact use it as a truck enough to make it worth my while.

I doubt it. 1979-95 Toyota's suffered because of the fully boxed frame, great design just not good for salt/moisture/mud over years. In 95 when they started to go with US steel, it got worse. Now the steel, and the shitty process used for rust prevention that does not stick to the welds combine for a watch out or be warned situation. Would be nice if they fix it! But at least they have stood behind them this far. A little preventative maint on the owners part keeps the rust at bay for the most part.
