How's it going all? New here, but I'm looking to buy a first gen, extended-cab pre-runner 3.4l right now. At the moment, i'm mostly looking for wisdom on what to look for when buying and what kind of potential mechanical issues these trucks have. I'll be interested in some mods later on down the line, but first things first you know?

In any case, I'm busy using the search function as you read this but I would still be very much obliged if anyone could point me towards some links for threads or other sites which:
    - buyers guides
    - maintenance schedules
    - potential mechanical issues
    - parts that have a tendency to fail
    - things that owners often neglect to maintain
    - any other good tacoma references!

    Thanks alot everyone
    -Pete

Welcome to TW! Take some time to explore some of the old threads with the search tool. A lot of the info you're looking for is already here, it's just a matter of finding it.
BTW, the 3.4 is a great engine...very reliable. Just an all around excellent truck.

    Thanks guys,
Yeah, I've been searching quite a bit on this and another forum I found. From what I can tell:
    1. check the timing belt changes
    2. check leaf springs out back
    3. standard stuff.

I really have not, despite quite a bit of effort, been able to find a long-term maintenance schedule for these trucks including stuff like 30k-100k replacement items. Any ideas?

Also, when should water pumps and thermostats be replaced?

    Thanks again!
    -Pete

I know this thread is old, but to give you some ideas ...

Toyota service told me they would copy the maintenance schedule and give it, or
you could buy a Haynes repair manual at your local auto store (good service schedules)

About the water pump, just had the water pump (original) replaced on my 1988 Toyo pickup last year at 94,000 miles and it wasn't even leaking. Had it replaced since they were replacing the radiator (original) and some front engine seals and belts.

So, 19 years out of an original water pump and radiator .... I'm on my 2nd Toyota truck ... so far! ;)

A lot of my friends have this engine and it is good, like really good. One of my friends drives it like he stole it, another drives by the book, but now that I think of it...hmmm... I don't recall any of them replacing the timing belts ?
