I just finished reading the entire thread of theduckbutter for Timing Chain R & R (05' Making it a 2nd Generation). I will try to figure out how to ask him a question in main forum. Makes the idea of picking up a low mileage engine and dropping it in seem much more feasible. I am not sure if my Yota has plastic in the timing section of truck or not? I do quite a bit of work on this truck and my '03 Chevy T/Blazer. Tacoma been in driveway for a bit over 1 week, pretty sure it is the T/Chain as has that fast start (no compression crank) sound.. I stopped cranking right away, when no start as don't want to bend valves, been there done that in my younger days. I am not tackling this job as I have a mobile mechanic buddy who I hire on this big stuff.. I'm waiting on him to come by my house as his schedule is busy with the pandemic, lots of repairs. I am going to price a low miles Japan pullout engine online while waiting for him to check into issue with my possible timing problem.

Just a little clarification, if you have a Prerunner (6 lug 2wd on the 4wd frame), then you have the 2.7l 4 cylinder.

The 2.4l was put in the 5 lug 2wd Tacomas (non-Prerunner)

You learn something new everyday. This is the wife's truck. I drive and work on it at times, as she is disabled and not driving, much. I will check tonight, to see what exactly I have. I have seen Pre-Runner written on it, and have seen 2.4 on the engine bay identification marker, I have removed wheels lost of times and have no idea how many lugs as truck in driveway, w/ jacked up timing issue. Thx man.

No worries, if it says 2.4l in the engine bay I'm assuming it's probably a 5 lug that someone slapped the Prerunner emblem on, but the amount of lugs will confirm. The Prerunners are built on the same frame as the 4x4s so they sit higher up, the 5 lugs are lower to the ground
