Yeah I didn't do a lot of activities up there! And a few times of passing vehicles on a one lane road on the side of a mountain will do it at any elevation.

    EDITED:

My daughter drove up here this weekend. Drive shaft was seizing on her on the way and she pulled over at least once. But she made it here. I gave her my car (gulp!) to go back to Abq with and will just wait on the shaft to come in and fix it here, so all is good. Thanks to Sgt Taco and TomTom for info and offers.
    __________

Any of you in Abq, close to UNM if possible but anywhere in the metro area is OK:

My daughter is going to UNM, and I need to replace her drive shaft on her Honda CR-V (sorry Taconians, but I'll be in my Toyota :) ). Her carrier bearing went out some time ago, I had a shop in Abq rebuild it, but they must not have rebalanced the shaft or something as it tore apart again and is making awful racket. I am concerned about her driving it back to SF for me to replace it. I am going to order an entire new shaft (she beat the old one up so fug it, better safe than sorry) and will drive it down to Abq to install it, but if I could use a driveway to do the labor in that would help. Stores and campus get antsy when you do automotive work in their lots. I just need ground to lay on (where my chances of getting run over are low lol) to yank that thing and put the new one in. Can't imagine it would take more than an hour.

Anyone want to donate their driveway as an operating room? I will drive my Taco down to do it, so a good chance to meet a fellow Tacoma. I still have to order the thing and get it here, so I am thinking no earlier than this weekend or sometime early next week probably.

    Appreciate it!

To answer it correctly, if you go to Google maps you can see exactly where the county has submitted for future paved roads (currently unimproved)... You have a right to be on and can travel any of those at any time. The land east of Unser and west of Grand Ave (unimproved rd) just south of the dune (and all of the open wash) is state open land and is regulated by flood control. Unless posted otherwise you can travel those routes under New Mexico OHV. Only times travel is not permitted is when flood safety restrictions are in effect. Now, as long as you or your vehical are not altering or being destructive to any of the flood control devices (damns, enbankments, culverts, channels and what not) it's okay...

An officer can tell you what ever he would like to... It being correct or not is a whole other thing. There is private property for sale just north of the dune, just off of Montezuma. I'd say he was just mistaken where the land boundary lines are. But some of those little trails do go threw the private property's boundary. Just play it safe and use Google maps and stay on the unimproved roads and open washes.

    From NMOHVA websight...

Motorized recreation on the public lands of New Mexico is under attack right now and all around you. Aligned under the guise of ‘environmentalism’, selfish elitists have determined that you have no right to recreate in your chosen way and are determined to LOCK YOU OUT from enjoying your motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, or 4WD on public land. Responsible motorized recreation has a legitimate place on public land. NMOHVA works with local user groups and public land mangers to promote responsible use and protect your access.

NMOHVA is also committed to creating additional motorized recreation opportunities in the state of New Mexico. NMOHVA supports local groups working with state and federal land managers and agencies to identify, develop, maintain, and promote appropriate trails and areas for all forms of motorized recreation.

Examples of "otherwise posted" signs. Both of these are pertaining to a wash and the bosque near my house where it dumps into the Rio Grande. Now if you are traveling in the wash, there are no obvious barriers to keep you out and you can not see the signs due to an elevation issue. so just be careful.

I have been stopped by several agencies throughout the years and if it is a true mistake (or make it seem like it is) and are respectful and not an ass to them, they have always (except for once) just warned me and send me on my way.

I've never had a problem there, and I see others on it just about every time I drive past. But I would say, call the number on the for sale sign just north of the hill (sound like a prospective buyer... Not someone that wants to off road) and ask what the boundrys of the property are...

But like I always say... "It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permition in the first place..."
