As I understood (I was looking to go to Amsoil) you should change the filter midway through the OCI. I looked at this Mobil 1 oil and the filter claims to last 20K miles along with the oil. This is the first I have heard of that. Most people I have heard of extending OCI beyond 10-15K change the filter part of the way through (unless running a particle filter set up or something similar).

Nope - look again. The manufacturer is on the back label.

This is where an EZ or Fumoto valve come in handy! If you try to get a sample from the drain bolt, you will get a contaminated sample as the oil drains down the exposed bolt and probably your fingers. Maybe you can scrub it clean with water.

I drive 26k a year, I'll stick with Mobil 1 5w30 and Toyota filters @ 10k intervals. Has served me well for over 260k miles. I looked extensively at Amsoil, I think it's overrated and overpriced.

    Alright, here's the plan:

I'm due for an oil change in about 1500 miles. I'm planning on doing the oil change next weekend or the week following. I'll run the annual protection for 10K and try to take some oil from the pan and do an analysis with Blackstone. See what Blackstone says. I will probably change at 15K and have it tested yet again to see what that analysis says. If the first test says go 20K miles, I'll do it.

I am going to use the same filter the whole time. Most of these high quality extended life oils like Red Line or Amesoil will recommend changing the filter intermittently, Mobil 1 states this is a 20K mile filter. I guess we will find out.

I'll start off by saying this oil is a little pricey. Everything in the picture above is about $80 with tax. I got the jug from Wally World for $49.99, Qt for $12.00, and Filter for $9.99.
Not as bad as Amesoil (same set up with an extra filter for 25K miles of protection I think I projected to cost me about $110). Most places sell the Mobil 1 jug for $69.99 and the Qts for $16.99, so I think I got a good deal. It's not horrific on price, just takes some getting used to lol.

    Stay tunes for results.

Remember not long ago it was recommended that you change your oil every 3k?

For quite a while now I've been using Mobil 1 on all my vehicles. I change it at 10k with a tire rotation. Never any issues with any car or truck.

The only machine where I leave the oil in a full year is the snow blower. The oil gets changed once a year, every Summer. I use the vanilla Mobil 1. Its not that big a deal to change the truck oil every 5k miles.

I usually put 15-18K mikes a year on my Tacoma. That's what, three oil changes. Each one costs about $25. Castrol GTX 5W-30 is like $18 from Walmart, filter and crush washer from Toyota, $5.00. The $50 I save is not worth the piece of mind I would lose. Still gotta crawl under to lube the joints, look around, see if anything needs attention. For God's sake, were truck owners!! Why are we looking for reasons NOT to wrench? 'Specially one of the easiest things on a 2nd Gen.

Hey you wanna waste time and money, that's your prerogative. ;)

My peice of mind comes from science, science says you can extend OCI with higher quality oils. Changing the oil at 5k with these oils provides no additional benefit, so why would it provide peace of mind to do that?

Why would it provide piece of mind? Cuz I'm a automation engineer that has designed high speed automation for 30 years. PM is the number one thing to keeping million dollar equipment running. As far as time and money, it's about $4 dollars a month and about 45 minutes for the two additional oil changes.

I think a lot of people change their fluids more than the mfg. calls for simply because they like to get outside and tinker with their vehicles. I'm one of those people.

Unless you are in the Severe Service category there is no reason to change Mobil 1 Full Synthetic any sooner than 10,000 miles or 1 year.

Most all of the SuperTech automotive lubricants are made by Citgo--here's the search page for Walmart's MSDSs...

I change my oil sooner than the "recommended" OCI because as with just about anything else that comes with a standard issue "recommended" time frame, it's not the best for EVERY individual.

Also, oil does not magically wear out and become less safe to run at a specific mile or day. It gradually breaks down and loses viscosity.

The best thing to do is send a sample into blackstone after so many miles to see how it compares. You're either spending a few dollars extra per year or you're causing extra wear on your engine. The couple dollars a year seems like cheap insurance. :notsure:

To each their own. I really don't care how other people service their own vehicles. I've got plenty of other shit to worry about on a daily basis. :goingcrazy:

Just put in the Annual Protection this morning. At 60,480 miles.

I think I'll run it for 15K and then do a change and send a sample into Blackstone Labs just to keep costs down. Originally I was going to have it tested at 10K and again at 15K, probably nothing wrong with trusting the oil to 15K.

    We'll see how it does.
