Great...I had my A-pillar repaired and painted a month ago and they never told me this, so I went ahead and waxed it last week. First time I've ever waxed a vehicle in my life too...fml.

that makes sense how the wax would cover it and stop the air from reaching the paint to allow it to dry now thanks

The actual term is "off-gasing". The thinners and other chemicals in the paint need time to evaporate. When shops use heat booths to bake the paint and accelerate the "drying" process, the off-gasing time is reduced.

4 months sounds a bit long. I've been told 30 days in the past by my olocal body shop.
