    Hey guys,

I just bought a 2008 Double Cab 4x4, not TRD. The only extra option with the buttons to the
left of the steering wheel is the fog lights. I am a little confused on what I have going on with
the rear differential. Just regular open differential? I want to start changing out fluids starting
with the rear differential and was wondering if I just need to use 75w90 gear oil and no additive?

    Thanks!

Considering you don't have the TRD Sport (LSD), you can use 75-90 without the additive. The additive "shouldn't" hurt anything, but I wouldn't use it if the differential doesn't require it. I used Lucas 75-90 synthetic oil last weekend and I'm very impressed with the results!

Thanks for the reply. Just crawled under the truck and there is a sticker on the rear differential that says LSD oil only!

Good thing you checked! You can get the oil with the additive already mixed in or the tube to mix in with regular. Are you changing the front and rear diff or just the rear?

Don't know how the double post got up there! I'm planning on doing both, figured I'd start with the rear. Deciding on mobil 1 or the royal purple at twice the price.

The rear was a piece of cake for me, but I'd suggest lowering the spare for easier filling. I didn't, so it was a pain in the ass to get the rest of the bottle in there. I ended up having to use more in the third bottle to compensate for what I couldn't get in with the previous two. I wish you the best of luck on the front considering it is a timely process. In this instance, I am glad I chose the Prerunner. :D Although I do wish I had 4x4 at times :anonymous:

Well maybe I'll save that for another day with more time! Rear today, transmission fluid at the dealership soon. That's a good start.

How many miles are you at? I need to get my transmission done as well. Just haven't had the time to go to the dealership.

Just rolled over 87,000 yesterday...not too bad for a 2008.

That's not bad at all! Mine's fixing to roll over to 104k without even a drain and refill on the tranny

The maintenance log book it came with doesn't mention the transmission fluid change at all, unless I'm missing it somewhere. I've heard 100,000 is recommended, and noticed some people over 200,000 on here that have never done it!

My mother's 4Runner has 214,000 on it and it has never had any maintenance done on the transmission! It's crazy! I've heard that a transmission that has never been opened at the 30-60k interval should never be opened. It has something to do with the new detergents causing the gears to slip. I'm on the wall about whether or not I should do a drain and refill.

Rear differential complete. I did forget about new crush washers, or whatever they are called. Nothing is leaking so I'll get new ones next time. I went with high performance valvoline 80-90 with some additive since it's a 2008. Seems there could be vibration with synthetic from what I've read on here.

I didn't get new washers either, so I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts leaking. I don't know about vibration issue, but I haven't had any problems out of the Lucas.
