Hi all, happy to join the club, I picked up a 2021 TRD OffRoad 4x4 about 3 weeks ago has around 47k miles. I read an unrealistic amount about how noisy the motor is and mine like every other one ticks and taps just as loud and I get that's normal. Current noise that I'm hearing is like the normal tick/tapping sound at idle but when under light acceleration and low speed it sounds like that tapping ticking is louder and consistent with the RPM, can't hear it if I'm accelerating at a normal rate on the road just under light acceleration and lower speeds. Just filled up with Shell 87, didn't know if it was pre-detonation. Last car was an Impreza which would only run on 93 because of consistent pre-detonation and in this case it's not really sounding the same. Anything would be appreciated, thanks!

DI is louder than PI. If it is that and nothing abnormal like lifter tick etc.

some cars have insulation designed for this.

2022 TRD OR 4X4 here and it's noisy as well. I hear the light ticking that I've heard in several of the tacoma's I've owned .I hear a noise around 20 - 25 mph like a sewing machine . I think its always there but as truck speeds up , can't hear it as well. As the truck slows down I can hear it just fine. It doesn't sound like ticking though. If I had to describe it I'd say it makes a , sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh sound. How'd you guys like that description ? Any ideas anyone ?

It's a noisy engine, I figure whatever I'm hearing is normal. This video helped explain it for me.

Jump to 21 minutes if you just want to hear what the rattles and bangs actually are.......

You have OR, so it is not a vacuum pump. So you left with a high pressure pump, injector clean cycle and other noises related to cooling fan, purge valve, etc.
Do yourself a favor and spend $30 on obd2 app and see what's up

Try 91.my 2017 runs smoother and quieter on 91 . Tried 87 for gas savings and what others are saying but I switched back to 91 due to said reasons .

I've got an obd2 scanner but I don't have a CEL so would I see anything if there's nothing on the dash or warnings on?

You need to setup obd2 to monitor high pressure fuel system, injection modes to see if your noise is related to these systems.

Check out the video in post #3 on this link to see if this is the same noise you are hearing.

No it's not a chirping like that, I can only hear it from in the cab really and it's only when I'm light on the throttle and at idle, I can only hear it until 2k rpm and it goes away, sound speeds up with the rpm until 2k. It's a loud tick but not really a knock. Truck was a lease before and reports showed maintenance by the book.

Also: Try test driving another, it very well could just be these noisy engines and end your search.

note: I don’t read the whole diatribe, so sorry if I missed this has already be done.

I drove a 23 SR with 100 miles on it and never heard it. I've got 3 friends who own a 16, 19, and 17 tacoma, all 3.5 4x4 autos. All say they tick but not the kinda tick I've got in the cab I've been hearing.
