    Hello--

New owner and new member so please go easy on me ;) I've been lurking for a couple weeks and it's clear this is an awesome community.

I just picked up a well maintained 2001 5sp 4x4 TRD V6 (215K) to work on and to teach my son to drive. I figured an older 2-seater truck with manual transmission will keep him mostly out of trouble and will hopefully be a good platform for him to learn to *actually drive* a car (as opposed to just pointing it in different directions).

I'll also confess that I've always wanted an older Toyota pickup (I loved my 67 FJ40 back in the day). Here's a pic:

    taco.jpg

I did a bunch of research on first gen's before buying, am mechanically inclined, and am pretty meticulous when buying a used car. However, after lots of poking around I just realized that the ABS system in this car has been totally removed...eg there is no fuse, there is no anti-skid control module, etc. Of course I realized this after the sale.

    Doh.

I have read that ABS in this generation was more hazard than help but my question remains: can anyone offer any insight about adding ABS back into this thing? In my defense, it's crazy times where up is down and rando Taco owners want to un-delete an ABS delete job, lol

    Thanks much--
    PP

Frame looks pretty good. Crawled around underneath before purchasing...it was the first thing I checked. I reserve the right to discover something nasty that I missed (as I did with the ABS). But I'm reasonably confident the frame passes muster. FWIW it's got new rack and pinion, new leaf springs, Bilsteins, drives nice and straight, etc.

Thank you for the kind words! Looking forward to hitting some fire trails soon.

FWIW: Took the kid out for his first drive in this rig last night. After lotsa stalls he seems to be grasping the concept and has been able to exert some control over his left leg, lol. On the plus side we have confirmed the clutch works/grabs just fine...

I think ABS was optional in 2001. You could find a donor truck in a junkyard for parts.

OK, thanks for the suggestion. Was poking around the net and Ebay and looks like the ABS control unit has been discontinued, or at least it's not easy to find.

Is ABS on this series that bad? Why do some folks do ABS deletes?

Are you sure your truck came with ABS and had it removed or if it just didn't come with the option?

The ABS on these trucks just seems to be crude implementation of early tech. It isn't highly sophisticated, which sounds good, until you realize how sensitive that old school tech is to malfunctioning. Newer stuff is much more robust and precise.

If all the stuff is missing there is a lot to source and get working.

Welcome! Thats a badass and nice looking truck. I'd be stoked if I got that when I was turning 16.

Welcome to the forums, and great find on the truck!
Driving a manual is becoming a lost art, so I applaud your efforts.

Also, my 2000 SR5 does not have ABS from the factory. I know the brakes well enough to predict where and when they will lock in an emergency stop, and that’s good with me.

Hm...I thought I had read that ABS was standard for 2001 but perhaps I'm mistaken. Based upon my visual inspection, if someone did an ABS delete they did a pretty nice job. I'll have to dig a bit more...the Toyota VIN decoder doesn't mention ABS so maybe it never had it to start.

    Thanks for the comments!

Lol, I should have said this was *not* a gift for him. This is my truck; he will get to drive it if he can handle it and keeps his grades up.

I'm hoping that the need to shift overrides his need to hold a phone

Definitely most likely that your Taco didn't come with ABS. If the VIN didn't show ABS when you ran it through the Toyota site then it didn't come with it

    Welcome.

That's gonna be the truck he brags about later in life and says, "man, I wish I'd never sold that truck". We all have those vehicles in our past. I hope he enjoys it.
