I'm looking around for a 1st Gen. Taco and am wondering what are some of the things I should look/listen for when I test drive. I don't have too much experience with these trucks, so I'm just wanting to know if there are any small things that are particular to Tacos. Thanks in advance.

Find one that has not been lifted, large tires, or a plow. Don't be afraid of the I-4 engine, it is very stout. Once you find one, take it to a good mechanic, have him give it a full inspection, you will have to pay for this, money well spent. I prefer extra cabs or 4 doors, I also prefer 4wd, I live in a snow zone. If I was in your shoes, 96-98, I-4, 4x4, extracab, 5 speed, you would be living happy for many years. :)

Check the undercarriage and frame for any serious rust.

Not a bad way to go, the 3.4 is a stout engine, if your going to do a lot of climbing, maybe consider a TRD Offroad with the locking rear diff. ;)

Great advice from everyone.Having a mechanic look it over is a great idea. Also sounds like the v6 will work better for you as well as a manual trans.Happy Shopping and be paitient.

I have an old buddy that's a mechanic for the local dealership. I plan on asking him to take a looksee when I test drive. As far as considering the TRD, "I git a stiffie when i drive by one!" ... anyways, that's exactly what I'm looking at. Thanks for the advice and I will be posting pics hopefully really soon.

Look for an '01-'04 DoubleCab V6 w/ TRD package and 4wd. Love mine! They're hard to find, but don't settle for something you don't want. You can always find a good deal, especially in these economic times!
