Hey all. I just picked up my first Tacoma. It's a 2016 TRD sport. I bought it with nearly 200,000km so I was hoping all the bugs of a first year model would be worked out. Boy was I surprised. When test driving the truck, I noticed a smell but couldn't quite figure out what it was. Otherwise the test drive went well. Everything functioned as expected. I purchased the truck as-is from a dealership near me. I figured I could save a bunch of money by certifying the truck myself instead of having the dealer do it. I was right about that. The truck needed nothing to pass inspection except a burnt out license plate bulb, fog light bulb, and a couple windshield wiper blades.
Now I wanted to find out where that smell was coming from so I proceeded to clean the interior. I started by removing the front seats so I could give the carpet a good vacuum. I have since nearly completely removed the interior minus the dash and headliner. I removed toe centre console, and back seats including the under seat storage boxes. I also found an aftermarket (taco tunes) speaker box and amp behind the rear seats. When I removed the sub box, I found it to be severely water damaged so that has since been tossed. I'll have to fabricate a new box for it once I address the big issue.
Yes the big issue. I have a couple water leaks in the rear of the truck. The centre brake light and the cab vents are leaking. I put windshield urethane on the light and reinstalled it (all fixed). I then tried to seal up the cab vents with flex seal (actually gorilla sealer but i forget the exact name of it) but the driver side continued to leak. I just now applied a generous amount of 3M marine caulking around the opening. I hope this solves my water leaking issues for good.
I have also completely removed the carpet and pressure washed it to get all the moldy smell out as well as all the dog hair and coffee stains. Carpet looks almost like new again! My next task will be to detail all the interior bits before reinstalling everything and shampoo the seats. I wasn't expecting this much of a basket case....especially from Toyota! Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on. The frame is good (yearly Krowned). The diff leak has been addressed as well. I don't see any oil or coolant leaks coming from anywhere. The serpentine belt isn't noisy, the fuel pump neither. I do hate the lag so I'll probably be looking for a pedal commander or sprint booster.
Anyway sorry for the long drawn out intro....Anyone else have this much headache in the first week of owning a Taco???

I’m putting nerf bars (running boards) on today. Then cleaning the interior bits and seats.

I guess if they never cleaned it before, they would never change the cabin filter either! Lol

So I finally got the interior all back together. I built a new sub box. It fits better than the Taco Tunes box. I flush mounted the sub and now the seat folds flat again. image.jpg

My dad has an old used camry, changed his interior filter over the weekend and I pulled this ball of stuff out along with the dirty filter.

So all that work was kind of a waste! The sub is blowed up! I guess I’m sourcing a new sub. I think I’ll just buy a cheap one off Amazon for now. I’d prefer to have a few 8s rather than a 12
