A bit confused... The vF page says "this software is not a tune", but you're saying that it does come with tunes? That include the 2.0 for AT?

I've just bought the VFTuner itself and that was enough to get me access to tunes for my AT. I don't know if I have the final 2.0 (non-editable AT) or not.

Thought I'd give my impressions, if OP doesn't mind. Understanding what to buy and how it worked took more effort than setting up and tuning. Tuning took seconds unless you count 5 minutes of idling. At first, I wasn't super impressed. The difference was noticeable but not extreme. I'd like to think I had a good feel for shift timing based on speed and RPMs and how to manipulate the accelerator to encourage a shift I wanted (such as speeding up a tad to encourage it to shift into 6th). I was fearful I'd have to completely relearn and that the accelerator would be more sensitive. I was incorrect. Minimal retraining was required on my end.

The first day or two was a nice change. Definitely rough in the beginning as the tune learned my patterns. But today I took it out on some back roads, up a bunch of hills, and across a lot of highway. I got goosebumps. The Taco feels so much lighter and responsive. It's a lot more fun to drive. It even coasts better. My family had a suburban and that thing would hold speed for a while after letting off the gas. Now the Taco does the same thing (though not as extreme).

It holds speed better. Coasts better. Shifts gears better. Stays in gears better. Responds better. Engenders smiles better. All this is without making any edits myself (haven't bought the tune pack and they haven't released the tunes for AT yet). I'm going to take it on some more grueling highway hills soon and see how it goes.

Thanks to OP for putting up a laymans (sp?) description of how this all works. Also @tonered, @Shellshock, and a number of others for answering questions of mine and others.

vF is software to create and edit tunes, it is not itself a tune. BUT there are tune packs available at an extra cost and vF can flash them to your truck. from here you'll need to catch up at ovtuned.com and the vF thread here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/vf-tuner-for-the-3-5l-tacoma.662948/

Been on the fence for some time but knowing in my heart I would do this eventually.
The LABORDAY discount pushed me over the edge (along with the past 25 pages). Just pulled the trigger. Now I need to buy a new laptop.
Funny how these things snowball eh?
Oh well, ya can't take it with you!

Thanks, that was my initial understanding, just thought the poster was saying that some basic tunes came with the software i.e. I didn't need the tune pack (which I already ordered) if I wasn't doing anything exotic.

Has anyone that has done this done any serious driving in the mountains? I did a mountain trip last week and it really opened my eyes to the lack of power in the 3.5. Will I see a noticeable difference? I’m close to pulling the trigger on this.

I haven't bought the tune pack yet (AT) but was still able to flash a tune by buying vftuner. I don't know if it's 1.05 or 2.0 or what.

I think the ‘standard’ tune that comes with VFTuner has some limited edits in it. Enough edits that the benefit is seen, but not all the 2.0 goodness, nor even 1.05 level.

Damn! You mean to tell me that, as good as this tune feels, it isn't even up there?! Guess I should take advantage of that labor day sale and get the pack.

Or.... someone in your area might tune you for $150 or so once it comes out. That seems to be the going rate. But... If I'd already bought VFTuner and for another $250 (over the $150) I'd probably just buy the pack.

Hopefully some others can chime in and describe the differences between the tune that comes with VFTuner, and 2.0. Mat described it rather vaguely when he did, but he was clear that it wouldn't contain all the goodies. Perhaps he just left out Performance and Gear Lock. I don't know if anybody really knows.

I don't think there's too many peeps near me that could do this, plus I don't mind spending the dime to be able to (eventually) make my own edits.

I think that tune in vF is stock? We never got the Example Tunes.

    I could be wrong.

Ah, bummer that then. Am I mistaken in that Mat said there would be a minimal tune with the kit?
