Picked up a 2005 Tacoma double cab in January, It has an Alpine Ine-w940 double din unit, when i turn the volume to 60% the sound quality goes down and there is some distortion. I am looking to upgrade the sound on a budget. Should i upgrade the speakers or add an amp? I don't trust the local stereo places to give me honest advice. Any input would be appreciated!

Both is the obvious answer. If youre only going to upgrade one and are on stock speakers, get speakers.

By sound quality goes down I trust you mean just that? It gets louder but more distorted? My guess is you are overdriving the speakers - I would think there instead of amplifier.

What are you wanting from your system? A nice front stage can cost over 200 easily, an amp another couple hundred. Or you can get good enough for half the price.

Check out this thread, he went budget conscious but still got some nice stuff. You wont need an LOC, just amp, wiring, speakers and adapters if you run 6.5 instead of 6x9.

Also, might want to change your thread title. Its vague and just unnecessarily alarming.
