My first post . . . there is a 2016 Tacoma for sale in my town from a private owner. I know the person selling. I wouldn't call him a friend but I know him. Anyway, his wife lost her job about 4 months ago and he needs to get rid of his Tacoma. It is a 2016 Sport in Inferno. It has 22,751 miles on it. I have driven it and it seems very solid. I took it to a mechanic that I trust (my uncle) and he said it was in great shape. The asking price is $25,500. It will only have 4 months of warranty left. The only concern I have is the 3rd brake light leaking down the road. Can it be fixed by someone other than a Toyota dealer? Thanks guys . . . I plan on making my decision this weekend.

That sounds like a great price depending on package. Double-cab or access cab? If DC, short or long bed? Tech package?

What’s the story with the leaking brake light? If it’s not leaking now, I doubt it will leak later.

From what I have seen it’s not that difficult to fix. But I agree if it’s not leaking now the seal isn’t defective.

Get over thereEdit: see if you can get it for 23k. You’re going to need tires (nice tires)

I'd be more worried about the AT fluid level and transmission/ECU TSBs. Seems the early 3rd gens ad a higher occurrence of low AT fluid. Obviously all that can be addressed, but would be good to verify before purchase and plan accordingly. That is, unless it is a 6MT :)

    If that’s a double cab v6, that’s a hell of a price. Especially if 4x4

I don't know. That price seems high. In 2016 that probably had a sticker around 31 or 32K and likely sold around 30K. Only 17% depreciation over 4 model years.. well I know Tacomas hold value but that's pretty aggressive. I see the emotions here where you might not want to bargain too hard since the fella is seeing some hard times, and if that's the case it's your money and your conscience. At that low mileage it's still a good reliable truck once you get the nits picked out of it.

Sorry I wasn't real specific . . . it is a double cab, and 4 x 4. I took it to a car wash and let it have the water. There was no water inside and my uncle checked the trans fluid. He said it was good. I know some deals sound too good to be true, but I believe he is in a little financial bind, and he didn't mind my uncle going thru the truck. So am I to assume that if the 3rd brake light isn't leaking now, I probably won't?

Move it. You joined TW; a leaking 3rd brake light is going to be the least of your problems. ;)

It could, but it could also happen on a 2019. Granted they superceeded the part. Just saying it can happen to any vehicle at anytime. If you’re that worried about it spend an hour pulling it out and sealing it with some silicone. Go buy the truck

It’s probably been through all of those already. I never had the CPS or hood issues.

You might research buying an extended warranty while the factory warranty is still in effect if that is important to you. My warranty expired last week and I was getting voicemails asking if I wanted to extend it. I did not buy it because I do all the work on my vehicles plus, it's a Toyota.

In addition to checking the CPS, rearend gasket, transmission software update, ask the owner if the trip meters ever randomly reset. If so there is a TSB.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-uninitiated-trip-meters-reset.399689/page-26

Here is a cool PDF with everything you could want to know about the 2016s.

    https://www.tfltruck.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/2016-toyota-Tacoma-Technical-specs.pdf

I will say, I've had my 3rd Gen for 3 years now and still love it once I had the above issues addressed.

Sounds like a good deal. And low miles. Also IMO inferno is the best color on a sport!
