It makes no sense that the dual VVT-i 2.7 engine (the one with more power and torque) is not used in the Tacoma. That is just plain extremely stupid. I must ask, why do they even make the single (intake only) VVT-i 2.7 engine anymore? Maybe if the dual VVI-i engine develops it's power/tq at some lofty rpm it would make sense for those other vehicles, because utility vehicles need more useful low-rpm torque. That's the only reason I can think of. Anyway, smaller forced-induction engines will soon replace huge coffee-can piston engines. Efficiency is in! Yay for 4-cylinders! :)

That's the whole point of VVT, it allows for good low end power and more on top as well.

I concur w/ going back to a smaller truck. If i wanted less than 20 mpg, I'd buy a full-size.

Yup, I'd love to see something tiny with a little 4 banger standard and the 2.7 as the big motor. Regular cab and something along the lines of the mid-80's extended cab for extra enclosed space more than people space. 2x4 and 4x4, 5 speed or 6 speed manual, and ideally a solid front axle on the 4x4 model to gear it to the offroad market. Would be a HUGE competitor to the Wrangler.

Yup, they used to offer the V6 in a regular cab, and guess what? It got worse mileage then the 4 banger.

Exactly. They could put a V8 in the regular cab and guess what....it would get shitty V8 fuel economy.

Naw, it'd probably get good V8 gas mileage...but still V8 gas mileage.

My last truck was a 99 GMC sierra regular cab short box 4x4. 4.8L V8 5 speed. Got 17-18 mpg mixed. My current taco, which is about 1000 pounds lighter, much more aerodynamic, and has a motor half the size gets about 3 mpg better. Something doesn't add up there.

What size tires were you running on your Sierra? You may have a couple issues caused by the 31's on the Taco. Seems to me on these trucks that, with the 4 cyl, it doesn't take much to adversely affect the MPG. Larger tires on a marginally powered 4 cyl truck will most likely impact MPG numbers more so than they would on a V8 truck where there's plenty of power to spare.

The 31's themselves will cause an MPG hit, but also the MPG calculation if you haven't taken the larger tire diameter into consideration.

First the factory 245/75R16 (roughly 31") with 3.73 gears. I put some 285/75R16's on and lost ~1mpg at most. My current taco has 3.91 gears and 31's, which seems to be a pretty ideal combo for my commuting duties. I think with smaller tires it'd be screaming on the highway. My last taco had factory 31's and 4.10 gears and got pretty much identical mileage, and it even had lockout hubs on it. Don't get me wrong, 3 mpg adds up fast, but I still don't see how this high tech DOHC 4 banger can't manage to blow my old push rod small block out of the water in mileage.

The things required to pull bitches
I bought a truck and didn't need it for a load and it was a 6 cly. So that makes me a poser? I don't think so. There was another reason a lot of us on here have trucks. It was to wheel and have fun. There was a reason I got a 6 cyl, because for my year the 2.7 was a bit under powered. For the desert and sand dunes here you need that extra power. There's a reason long travel trucks have mostly v6 and also have people cramming in v8 into them.

I'm starting to think you got a 2.7 by accident and now your doing what ever it takes to make you feel better about it.

^ Kinda wondering why he has so much hate for the v6 as well!?!

The 2.7 is a fine little engine, and fits my needs, but if I had the spare change, I'd have gotten the v6... Why? Because I think the extra power would be fun to have, not because I actually need it.

If that thought process makes me a poser, then f*ck it. I guess I'm a poser! :D

Ok i got off the phone with toyota corporate, see, they listen to me. This is what I got them to agree too. 2012 is still gen 2 , they wouldnt budge , so,they have 2 new regular cabs coming out. The first, same as now , but with the SHORT box(shorter box).the 2nd is the current setup, but they will offer it with the 4.0 liter, but only in 4wd . The "Toyota Ultimate Racing Development" version has the supercharger too!!! ony 500 offered , all in The west coast.

On a side note they wondered this; If they offfered a v-8, will some of the current v-6 owners buy, just to brag and say, " the v-6 is weak, I needed the extra power for merging so i bought the v-8"......kind of like the way they do now to the I-4.

Too much is NOT enough!!!! YYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
    ps, j/k:p

Wow - You have a horrible little truck complex LOL!

    I didn't think I need a V8, but knowing I'd tow a 2500lb boat, and hearing the 4cyl towing horror stories, I opted for the taco v6.
