Still super early for any review on my experience with +P (1/2 tank), but so far so good. I missed that "turbo lag". Had some questions though:

Any pro's/con's of using higher octane on +P, or is this also OL?

How about 4H/4L changes/improvements?

 

Yes premium fuel runs better yet, and yields a slight improvement in fuel economy.
4HI yields the same improvements as 2HI and 4 low has been significantly smoothed.

 

Contrary to popular belief, and claims by others... ALL tunes using vftuner are in fact OL. This has been beaten to death by Mat himself. We done extensive research and logging that back this fact. Anyone claiming they've made an OL specific tune other than Mat himself is pulling your leg.

To clarify more, only 3rd gen Tacoma tunes built from a tune pack file (there may be others but I'm not aware. I know Tundra and 4R tune pack files are NOT). Building from stock files will act like normal. Also, tweaking certain maps can negate the OL. Mat's code basically causes it to learn faster.

Made the 120 mile round trip again and this time took the interstate. I cruised along averaging 78-80 and got 21.4 mpg. Very smooth and nothing to report except the tune proved again to be the most refined offering I've experienced. It was tempting to play fighter pilot but not my style of driving.... I'm sure the truck would have been up to the task as it never felt strained and plenty of get up and go in reserve. I like the torque converter providing some oomph when needed in the rolling hills rather than shifting. Well thought out whomever brought that idea to the table and implemented it!

Here's my quick review after my 1st tank. Might be too early to fully review, but it's been so good that it needs some praise. I'll try to keep it short.

I've gone through several tunes (Kruiser 4.0, MD Ultimate Daily, KDMax6/7, Valley Runner 2.0, and KDMax Pro) and a lot of money. I'm about $1k deep in tunes and software/hardware, so hopefully this is my last tune. So please, no more improvements!

Anyways, coming from KDMax Pro, it was a nice change of pace. Mind you, absolutely nothing wrong with KDMP. It's all about my driving habits. The tip-in is so far the best out of the tunes I've tried. No problems driving in tight parking lots and the truck lurching. But there's also no lag in throttle response.

ECT button is mighty fun. Without it, is already fun. But for the times you need/want an extra power on the buttdyno, use it and you'll be happy. Having the option of the ECT modifications is one of my favorite parts of this tune.

The "half gears" (through TC settings?) that were mentioned can definitely be felt on the highway making shifting buttery smooth. I had to check RPMs to see what gear I was in because I couldn't feel the shift.
When I saw Nexus advertised as "smooth" I was thinking, "not another one". But it IS that smooth.

5th and 6th gear are much more usable now. I have these freeway stretches that always shift me to 4th, but now, if I keep speed limit, it'll drop to 5th instead.

The engine alone sounds better. Less clickity-clackity of the valves or something.

The only thing I'm waiting for is more miles on the tune to see what MPGs I get. Other than that, I hope no more improvements come out because I'm tired of spending so much on tunes. So whichever tune gets me closest to 17mpg, wins.

Interested in the +P tune but was hoping you could answer a couple of questions.

1). Located in CA. I’m sure you’re aware of the new law that was passed regarding tunes. Is the tune detectable when you go for a smog check, or by the dealer?

2). What exactly would I need to flash it myself? I would prefer to be able to flash back to stock if necessary

Awesome! I definitely understand the money part. That’s the only thing holding me back from trying out this tune. I wanna hear enough reviews from people coming from KDMP first before I bust the wallet out.

 

I also live and work in the infamous land of restrictions and guidance on what me may not do with our own private property. If I may attempt to answer your questions to the best of my abilities...

First, no vehicle here is due for smog until after it's reached 8 years old. So, a 2016 isn't due until 2024. As far as making sure the truck will pass, yes you can always flash back to stock then reflash afterwards. There have been some to test this new system and pass with a tune, but in common fashion, the laws were passed before making sure detection devices are up to the task.

Second, our files CAN be detected by a dealer if they should have reason to check. Ensuring every file is updated to current TSB should give them no reason to check (which they generally won't unless you complain about how it shifts). We CAN build files that are undetectable, but this limits a bit of the ability to properly tune AFR, because... Toyota. For those worried about warranty and such we generally build files this way so there is no question of detection by the dealer.

Third, to flash yourself you need VFtuner software and the cable kit. Then we can sell you a single file or tune pack. Here's the link for the software:

I too am waiting for more kdmp user to give their reviews . I fell back on valley runner to get mpgs back . I'm back at 20 mpgs stock gears , 285/75/16 truck weight 5,350 lbs
