IMO, for your standard digital cameras, even higher end non-DSLRs it is Canon all the way to the bank. For DSLRs, Nikon is #1, Canon is #2, but neither are bad choices!!

For a great every day camera, I absolutely LOVE the Canon Powershot S5 IS, 12x optical, 8.0MP.

Yea I'd be happy with the 70-200 is f2.8
    I'm using the 17-85
and a 50mm 1.8 which is the best lens to ever buy! 100 bucks! the 1.8 aperture rules my life!

I am also using the 40D at this time, my walk around lens is 24-105L IS, I also use a 350 XT that I keep a 17-40L for when I want a lighter set up. You Canon users, how about that 50mm 1.8, is that a cool lens or what!

I know this isn't the buy/sell forum, I guess I will list these there if anyone is interested. I have a couple of lens that I no longer use, I upgraded to "L" or IS.
Canon 28-135IS, 17-85 IS and 70-200 F4L (non IS) PM me if your interested.

at this point the cameras are so close in quality i think it's going to come down to personal preference...

a good resource is dpreview.com very in depth reviews

I have the Conon Rebel XT and the Nikon D80, the Conon is just collecting dust, it has an issue with the sutter, when the body gets warm, it likes to shut down, I took it to Wolf camera, they said its a known problem, and it will cost at least $200 to fix  so I got the Nikon... Night and Day difference, the Canon feels like a kids camera/toy :D
Im looking to get the 18-200 VR lens

I personally shoot Canon (20d with extra battery grip)

When I worked in a testing lab, we had a Nikon D40 (i think, its been a while). Good camera but I didnt like the feel/control layout.

Both produce very good bodies and I think it comes down to what feels/works best for each shooter. The other main thing to consider is lense availability. Most of my friends were already shooting Canons EF mount, so that provided me a way to try out their lenses or vice versa so it made sense. Another point, its generally said that Canons are much better for sports shooting(which I used to do alot of) because of the higher FPS while the Nikons will give a slightly (not much) better color accuracy.

Either way, have fun and play with them, the biggest difference in picture quality is the organic bit pushing the buttons.
