I think they’re illegal in nj.

They are legal from November 15th to April something * I think * but modern 4x4 systems and snow tire technology has basically made studs a thing of the past

 

I run studless snow tires on all of my vehicles, but I was considering getting studs for my truck. I'm just trying to gauge what everyone else runs to see if it's really necessary.

The forecast is saying that this Winter could be pretty exciting. If we're going to have a bunch of ice, the studs would be great.

 

I ran studded snows when I lived in NH. I did a couple of years in NJ.

only one year on the Taco. They did completely cure the annoying ABS problem on slippery roads.

 

Must leave eventually.

 

My Michelin defenders that everyone hypes here did the same for me. They were worth every cent. I could remove my abs over ride switch if I had a fresh blank.

I do! They were a lot of $$ so I am very happy they lived up to what so many were saying about them. That and the original stock tires performed so badly with plenty of tread left.

 

Just get chains for icy days? That way you don't need to hear the click clack of studs all winter long.

 

It’s only click clack when you’re going very slow.

Otherwise, it’s a hum.

I suppose that’s OK for here. It snows a lot more, and for longer, in NH. I lived on a mountain, so it was even worse. Chains are a PIA and limit speed. Studded tires are just ready to go.

I don’t run them here, because I realize it’s not necessary.

The over sensitive ABS system and prolonged pumping of the brakes causing you to actually not be able to stop.

 

All year long. (Bag on head dude is missing)

Tried them out on an ice skating rink like parking lot the first time I bought them and was able to accelerate, steer and stop surprising well.

 

They are good from mid October to mid April. Almost no one knows what they are though.

^For all the second gen guys here, also works with 09+ (shuts off not only the ABS but all the other nannies as well on 09+ trucks)
Studs, or anything more than some practice driving in snow and all-terrains or decent snow tires, really isn't necessary anywhere in NJ. Tall/thin A/Ts or snow tires on steelies are your best bet if your getting a dedicated winter set --- tall skinny because we get mostly wet heavy snow so it cuts through better and slower roll speed for smoother braking and accelerating , more like pizza cutter than snow tube effect. Personally i prefer less than max grip cause its more predictable when you do break traction and idk bout yall but i purposely go out n drive for some fun literally every time it snows

 

Thought about chains for a second. But I don’t think I’ll need them. I’ve been through some stuff with my Subie and haven’t needed them.

 

I think this is the insight I needed. I’m very pro snow tires but I’ve never had studded snow tires. It’s the novelty of the idea that I was even considering them. But I’m just going to go studless.
