What does the term "Expedition Truck" mean? Im sure everyone has their own opinion.. Mine would be a truck that is basically prepared for what ever is in front of it. Now I realize that could include sleeping arrangements which is why most expo rigs have RTTs, but I have a camping tent and dont feel the need to keep it in my truck to head in the expo direction. As of now I have full time in my truck a variety of things that would help me be prepared for anything. Including tow strap, shackles, wood bases for soon to be mounted high lift, full size shovel, maul, jumper cables, tire plug kit, bungees, straps, zip ties, tp, gallon of water and all the things needed to drive on IBSP like fire extinguisher, first aid kit, garbage bags.. Ive also just purchased a variety of hand tools to dedicate to keeping on the truck. Of course cant wait to install my OBA. Future mods include front fishing pole rack with cooler carrier, rear bumper with tire carrier and snorkel. I figure the term "Expedition Truck" can be used loosely but in my mind im building an Expo Beach Buggy/DD

OBA is another thing I want. Or at least a co2 tank. OBA seems like the cheaper more reliable route though.

I never got into the terms people used for their trucks. To me my truck is my truck. Doesn't matter if I'm using it to load up 24' lengths of aluminum for work or taking it camping for a week off the grid in Vermont. It's still my truck.

There is a really good write up in one of the 4x4 magazines I read a year or so ago that slams people who use "Overland" or "Expedition" terms for their builds and I couldn't of agreed with it more when I read it. I wish I could find it because the author brought up several good points I can't articulate, but I couldn't.

To me if your not going to South America or blazing your own new trails your not on a expedition. If your on a road already made that's not going on a expedition. If you over-landing - well yea no shit....trucks go over land - that's their sole purpose unless going under water :D.

In the end it doesn't matter what your build focus is in the end it's just a truck. You can call it what you want, but I like many old school people I know will chuckle at the term if used for anything less than an actual expedition vehicle.

    IMO real expo trucks:

    and fakes:

also got to remember 1/2 of the "expo" trucks in here wouldn't hold a dime to a similar truck not filled to the gills with 1 ton of unneeded gear that the owner never uses. the lighter the truck the better it performs and less stress on it.

oba is not that hard to set up and i think would be cheaper in the long run. all you need is compresser (viar 444), a tank of your choosing, pressure switch that coincides with your tank, power and ground wires and a couple fitting or plugs for the tank.

Boyd I understand what you're saying but you're wrong about the definition of the word expedition. Expedition means a trip for a specific purpose.

Expedition vehicles are vehicles set up/ designed/ modified for a specific purpose. If you were to say that a cross country road trip to go explore the west and go wheel Moab isn't an expedition then you are wrong. You are saying unless you go to Antarctica or South America it isn't an expedition, but that's why they are called "South American expedition" or "Antarctic expedition".

I agree that the term expedition vehicle has Long been associated with hardcore expeditions like referenced above. But you don't have to blaze a new trail to be on an expedition. You don't even have to leave pavement. Taking back roads to explore an area is an expedition.

    It's just a word.

I agree that the term being over used will loose it's meaning. I do feel like there are different levels of expo.. As I see myself forever on the expo bottom I am going to be fully prepared for driving off road and on the beaches and enjoy the Expo Beach Buggy title:D

I also plan on following BGRs write up and doin a high pressure water tank.

Co2 is much more reliable IMO. There are no moving parts except one valve and it requires zero power sources. Not sure how much simpler it could get.

My tank cost $80 and my regulator $55...bracket was lets say $50.

So for $185 I have a portable air system that can handle airing up 35" tires from 20-40psi over 40 times in one tank fill up.

Ill install OBA for my locker and a back up, but that's it.

This topic has been covered so many times so I'm not trying to argue, but how much does it cost to fill the tank? I you could refill it with an air compressor I see the advantage but if I have to take it to a welding supply company to get it filled, that adds a lot more cost. And I don't just mean the cost of getting it filled.

Ok, Ill concur with the definition and admit my opinion is biased and narrow.

So what are the specific purposes of all these "expo" builds?

To me I just see people slapping on thousands of dollars and hundreds of pounds of unneeded gear to "one up the Jonses". My opinions are biased and I know some of the "expo" builds are actually used, but the ones I see here make me laugh. At the Holeman show there were many trucks with 30-60k in bolt on crap and the truck was in show condition. Not even a scratch on the wheels. IMHO those "posers" ruin it for the people who actually use their truck.

either way you look at it...poser truck or real expo - still both trucks in the end.

$12 and the welding shop is next door to my work. I could walk there in 2 minutes. We have restaurant supply stores and welding shops all over down here to get them filled. Heck you can even get them filled at the Berlin Framers Market.

There is nothing to argue. Co2 is far more dependable and cheaper :D

I'd like on board air. I might do the tank option before I buy a compressor though.
