Yes, it works both wats. Just because it's a '10 doesn't mean it's mechanically sound either.

Delaware and New Jersey have drive through inspection centers that are state run and funded.

Including emissions? You just pay for the stickers, right?

That is one encroachment of freedom that I am glad that I have moved away from. But then again I am a fan of less government. I do believe that the majority of people do the right thing. The schmucks that drive unsafe vehicles still need to be cited.

    Congratulations NJ!

PS You are fortunate to have a Governor that knows that you can't spend more than you have!!!

I'm glad they made the change. Most people keep their cars running well, and I imagine that the vast majority of inspection-related repairs were emissions anyway.

My truck will finally pass inspection, and I think that's a good thing.

PA has the annual inspection and it is such a load! I was failed at one shop and they told me I needed $1300 worth of work. I went to the shop 1/4 mile down the road and they passed me without an issue. How can it differ so much from place to place. I knew it needed some stuff ( ball joints, rear shock). But seriously? Back in CT you inspected when you initially registered and that was it unless a cop saw something during a stop. I agree that some people will try to get away without fixing safety problems, but most bring it to the shop when a problem occurs. Or like me they'll pick the brains of my fellow TWites and DIY!

Ohio is another place that doesn't have inspections but at times I wish it did. I've seen so many cars with NO working tail lights, or my favorite, half of their high mount works but is barely noticeable.

    Wow...just WOW.

Pennsylvania inspections are strict (and a pain in the ass) but I'm glad for them. It prevents 'unsafe' vehicles from traveling on our roadways.

No information to support inspections? Give it a few years...they'll have plenty of people reason to bring it back. It's just a damn shame there will be people who will get killed or injured because of it.

Depends on the shop..... Some shops are strict - for liability reasons. If you get in an accident for something that was PASSED, the inspection station can be held responsible.

Other shops will pass you under the assumption that they won't be held responsible. For instance.... something that can easily be changed the day after you get it inspected. THe shop can say, "When I inspected it, it was fine" . As long as you sign off on it....it's not their issue anymore (in most cases).

The strict shops don't want to have anything to do with the liability issues even if you do sign off on it.

Yes, but it is all kinds of people in all kinds of cars who stop at the end of a 1/4 mile merge onto the highway.

X2. I was just thinking the impact would be bad. If the state couldn't find any data to support that inspection worked at keeping people safe, then I guess it should save us cash with no danger and that's always good.

I am always for less gov, but I am slightly pessimistic regarding the mass population of NJ drivers and their ability to keep their vehicles serviced. I will have to see how it works out. Hopefully we won't have checkpoints clogging up our roads looking for faulty vehicles like they do now looking for inspections stickers, registration, and insurance. I got stopped by 3 checkpoints last year.

    Good for you Mike.

I would feel safer in your truck then just about any other.

I worked in Virginia (yearly inspection) and rarely if ever did a vehicle come in with brake rotors worn through to the webbing. In Maryland (only inspected at title transfer) it does not shock me any more. "'It just started making noise" is the description you hear. Yea right.

I once saw a vehicle that had done that to BOTH front rotors to the point where what was left of the discs was broken loose and hanging on the front axle shafts. The vehicle was only stopping on the rear drums (only about 20% power of the system). The ONLY reason the car was in the shop was because an axle shaft was so bad it broke and the car would no longer move. "Can you just put an axle in it?"
    NO!

A Maryland inspector cannot condemn a car and take the tags. Only a trooper can. In an extreme case, you can have the customer come pick up the car when you arrange for a trooper to be there. They can tell the customer it can only leave on a wrecker. You will make your point but you will lose a customer, so many shops are shy about doing it.

Those people ARE on the road with you. Following you on the motorcycle, coming to an intersection with your family.

"Your brakes are below specifications and require service (show readings), your tie rod end has play in it (show play), and your air conditioner has a leak and is low on refrigerant."

"How much to fix the AC? I have some stereo equipment on order, so I cannot afford that other stuff right now."

    Sheesh
