It's not new, it's not Mexico
New Mexico stopped requiring safety inspections many years ago and you can tell. We have all these heaps on the streets with cracked windshields, no mufflers, blowing blue smoke, someone else's license plate, and no insurance.

Like rolling your eyes at an intelligent comment is any different than name calling? Play favorites much?

inspections in the northeast should be manditory. shit wears so fast up there. most people in the south or in warmer climates dont get it. Little grandma who doesnt get inspections doesnt know her brakes are bad or frame is rusted through and they become a danger to the rest of us. or joes shmoe with no money puts off replacing his tie rod ends if there were no inspections hed drive till they fail and wind up with one of his wheels pointing left and the other pointed right going 80 down the freeway.

they also check tires. out here in cali it seems like the run the tires until the cords show. then when it rains there amazed they cant stay on the road.

inspection make it so the gov has the control because people dont take personal responsibility

I'd rather the state retest drivers every few years rather than retest vehicles.

People killed or injured due to that lack of State Inspections? Idiot? Yes you are right - misplaced but right - idiots are responsible for more accidents than others. Idiots are people who chose to drive in an unsafe manner and operate unsafe vehicles.

Would you drive your vehicle if it was unsafe?

Or would you need someone to charge you $250 to tell you so. $250 you think may be high, but take a look at the real cost to taxpayers to implement such a program. I am sure $250 per vehicle is just the begining.

Idiot? Yes, idiots driving is an idiotic problem.

If you think I am an idiot for policing ones own actions and supporting enforcement of state vehicle codes - I am a big idiot! And I'm okay with that. :)

Now that was an intelligent response. When you roll your eyes at the thought of people being killed or injured due to driving unsafe vehicles, you do look like an idiot. While I agree that people SHOULD take responsibility for their own vehicles, that doesn’t mean that they will. As was pointed out above, you can personally take the best care of your own vehicle, but you are on the road with others who frankly don’t give a crap and just want to save money.
Hopefully they don’t end up killing or hurting themselves, or worse yet, your family or mine.

We don't have inspections in cali. My cars run just fine. It should be the responsibility of the owner to fix the car not the state or government. Emission tests are the money maker here. I understand the issue of safety, but why can't people just keep an eye on their own vehicles.

in ny now you cant renew the registration without passing an inspection. so if you drive without inspection or reg they will impound your car.

i am going to go out on a limb here, but i am sure most accidents are caused by human error and not mechanical failure.

x2 but what if you cant afford to fix your car even if you want to. but you still have to get to work so you drive anyway... with inspections they force you to drive a safe vehicle. inspections arent just about pointing stuff out thats worn out. You actually not supposed to pass someone if the car cant make it till the next inspection.

How many accidents in cali do you think happen because the cars werent well maintained? bald tires, bad brakes, (there arent rust problems here)
but ball joints, wheel bearings, u joints, tie rods all still wear out.

    yep!

Car can pass and then fail the next day if something goes wrong.

Keep gov't out of my business, they rarely do anything right.

This is why I have insurance, in case something fails and I hit someone I'm covered.

    naturally,

but if you slam on the brakes dont you wish theyd bethere. people drive too fast when it rains but bald tires sure as hell dont prevent hydroplaning

human error can also mean not taking proper care of your vehicle.

a car thats well maintained can drive or corner at higher speeds and be safer than a POS

X2 Totally agree with this one. There are too many people out there that don't know how to drive. There are people I see every day that I have no idea how they past their drivers test. As for the deregulation, I am all for that. The government has their hands in way too many aspects of life.

You think just because there are inspections in different states that the cars are the safest. I've been through other states and seen some real clunkers. California has accidents just like other states. We just have harsh smog laws here. My wife has family back east and in my opinion my truck I had at the time was in better shape then the junk out there. lol. In fact the salt from the interstate probably rotted out the rubber under my truck.
