I run my truck on manatee-based motor oil. They say you gotta put almost 200 manatees in the press to get a single quart of oil, but it’s totally worth it for me. Gonna keep this truck forever so it deserves the best.

the oil filter is very important during the break-in process. all those metals need to be picked up by the filter. instead they've been circulating around your engine wearing everything out. it will probably be fine but definitely increased wear on the engine. i would want the engine replaced for peace of mind.

You’d really expect them to replace a perfectly running engine because of something they can’t even prove happened? Not calling the OP a liar but for the dealer to get paid back for that engine they have to send the old one back, which Toyota will dismantle before they pay the dealer for the claim. That engine would 100% be denied by Toyota, putting the entire cost of the engine and labor on the dealer to cover. Easing a customers worry is not worth that expense. They would rather lose a customer than pay that out.

    Two words for this thread:

    Baxter Performance.

Not letting the dealer or a shop do mine. I called and asked but already knew what to expect, and they gave me the 10k crap too. I got 6x WIX 51085 (Nappa Gold 1085) and already have about 5.25 gallons of 0w-20 left. I'll do that one myself. I actually enjoy doing fluid changes. Something synonymous with taking a dump. Two thrones. One is mobile and the other flushes. Both do fluid changes. Anywho... a lot of people have done the filter relocation mod as well. I think I'll be okay with the spin off for a while but I do plan on getting the relocation setup. Pretty sure there is a whole thread for that subject somewhere.

Zero chance they would replace the engine over that.

Many owners would say the bigger issue is the micron level of filtration for standard filters (non synthetic). I'm not sure the micron level of all the different filters, those nutty lube guys at BITOG probably know.

But, silica dust is an average 10 microns in size, so if you live in a dusty area or gravel road it'll just pass through the filter. That's why most all modern oils, even dino can go 10k miles and beyond with good filtration. It doesn't wear out by 10k miles, just gets polluted with contaminants in the oil (silica, gas, coolant, etc) and the TBN falls.

    1) Do your own oil and filter changes. (never trust nobody)

    2) DON'T go back to the shop that did this crap to you, if they can't/won't do an oil and filter change correctly what are the chances they will do more complicated work and get it right? There is no chance they will own up to any screwup.

    3) Dealerships are not there to "service" your vehicle, they exist to make money, LOTS of money for their owner.

My 06 has the oil filter mounted up top. Same with the 2019? It didn't blow oil into the engine bay without a filter?

The OP of this thread stated the dealer did the oil change at 30K miles. The OP did the oil change himself at 35K miles and discovered there was no filter element in the housing. This did not happen to me and it will not happen to me because if I get a new Toyota, I will do all oil changes myself.

    It sounds like you’re comparing an in-line 4 to a V6.
By the way, the OP never returned, and hasn’t logged on here in two years.

So much misinformation and ignorance in this thread, why? Because many of the younger ones have little to no experience with anything mechanical, that’s not necessarily a bad thing and they may learn with experience. This could be a teaching moment for them. Back in the stone age 50s many machines came without oil filtration. My 55 Chevy truck was a fine example, the oil filter was optional equipment

Not excusing what the Rubes at dealership did, yes they are incompetent but I doubt the OP will get anything meaningful from this other than “ well sir we sure are sorry” But what can you do and who can you trust? Turning your ride over to a stranger is a non starter with me. You must have a contact within the organization, a trusted service writer, a salesman you trust, a long time master mechanic anyone whom you know and trust is better that just leaving it to chance. Beyond that you could find an independent shop that has real mechanics with experience not boys.if you visit the website be sure to look at “about us” at the top header this is experience

All I can remember on some of those chevy 262 cu in v8's is that had a cartridge filter to back then.

Yep pretty much every thing had filter cartridges. You can bet a lot of them went out with out them. Personally I think that was a bad ideal on Toyota's part, it's hard to mistake a stream of oil on the floor pretty easy to spot.

Back in the day guys use to cheap out, and put a roll of toilet paper in the filter housing instead of an actual cartridge filter. They then wonder how their oil pump got plugged up.
