The V6s in these trucks have a canister with a cartridge filter, so the O Ring is a different style.

Who doesn’t stop and check the oil when the light comes on? Really, drive it? This story is about the oil light.

The only problem with an oil sample lab analysis, is that at this point it would be a test of fresh oil. It may take some time for the metals in the oil to build back up again if there is damage. I agree this is a good tool, but only after the engine has been run for some time on the new oil.

you're not going to like this answer but i would probably do this if it was me....

Trade in for new 2020 taco or tundra or 4runner or what ever you like best.

They say there is noting wrong with it ? cool make them take it for an excellent trade it value. If they wont give you a ridiculous trade in deal then say you want a new motor and all of the above advice people are giving, as a threat to them. Be stubborn.

This is probably the path of least resistance for you and them. They would be motivated to get a new truck off the lot and not deal with a pissed off customer, you get a brand new truck again, and they can re sell that ticking time bomb the next week :(...no arguing with them or corporate, no second guessing your truck years down the road, no back and forth for months

U might add $5-10k to ur debt .....butttt no more headache and life is more interesting because you have a new TRD OR in the color u want.

Since it was the 30k service, if you are keeping it, make sure you buy the extended warranty.

I'm kind of a dinosaur I guess, I don't do TWTR or FB or any of that stuff so I don't really know how it works or if they can delete posts they don't like... but it looks like Legacy Toyota has quite the active Twitter account. https://twitter.com/legacytoyota/ I didn't look at FB but its probably the same deal.

With that being said, nowadays companies are scared to death of what can happen to their reputations on-line. This young lady is not fabricating this story and she deserves something. I'd be pissed. Real pissed. This is her dream truck and it only has 30K miles. She takes it in for regular service. (I've owned 4 new tacos and one new FJ and have never graced the dealerships once after I bought them). She's a very valuable customer and they need to be kissing her ass because whatever happened is pure effing incompetence.

I'm not going to say how to use this or what to do. Lets give them a chance...(this week, not in a 1000 miles) but if they don't at least pony up that Platinum warranty I think some of you young folks here with TWTR and/or FB accounts should at a minimum post a link to this young lady's post that I just quoted above on Legacy's TWTR page.

I'm not versed enough to debate with some of these cats here as to whether or not there was permanent damage... but I can promise you this Brenda... you're gonna get your platinum warranty. At a minimum.
    G/L and keep us posted.

Running poorly and clicking isn't good but it doesn't mean that the motor is f'ed. I've seen plenty of times where a person ran their car out of oil on the interstate and tried to keep going only blow a hole in the side of the block.

As stated above, the truck shut itself down before major damage could occur.

Oil outs, wheel offs are pretty common, especially Walmart. I've been a service writer, shop manager for years, now retired. I've bought a Toyota Camry engine due to a oil out. It happens. Cost my insurance company (shop) $7000. Everyone from my boss, the owner, insurance company, oil supplier (filters included) stepped up and got it done. Tech that probably did the double gasket trick kept his job....shit happens. Demand a new engine, they have the insurance. If they don't pay, immediately lawyer up and they will immediately pay.

Had an XFriend do an oil change on my new truck. He forgot to tighten the canister drain plug. Next day I had oil on the ground and was down 2 quarts. Lucky I looked under the rig and caught it in time.

This is still an awful scenario. Lots of different advice given here.

Regardless of what you decide to do Brenda, even if they give you a new truck, do not go back to Tallahassee for service anymore.

I don't think it was wise mentioning the dealership's name on the internet and definitely wouldn't say anything more that could be deemed libelous .

As a mechanic for over 45 years, I can honestly say that damage to vital parts of your engine has occurred if it was driven without oil. Oil is the lifeblood of your engine and without it parts are not lubricated and will wear/score which will incredibly shorten life of your engine. If it was an o-ring (only o-ring I can think of would be on the filter housing) then there would be a steady stream of oil trailing behind you as you drove. When we trained oil change personnel, we always told to get down and look under vehicle to make sure no leaks before taking it outside. I guess they don't do that anymore to save time. Another good reason to do your own oil changes. I would demand new engine or an incredible long warranty to save you the money this will probably cost you after a while because it was their mistake not yours.

A diagnostic scan isn't going to tell you anything about the wear on the bearings or cylinder walls..... with the exception that the cylinder walls are so bad that the blow by kills your O2 sensors or catalytic converter. The only way to determine the damage is to pull the oil pan to look at the cylinder walls and pull the main bearing caps, and rod bearing caps. If they look good, you are good.

Alternatively, the dealer could get you whatever the longest "Toyota" extended warranty is. If the engine makes 100,000 miles then you didn't sustain much damage. This is probably the best option for them to make it right.

I'm guessing that you didn't really run that long without oil. The canister housing leaked out the oil, the truck told you, you turned around (should have just stopped and turned off the engine), after some distance it was bad enough that the engine stopped.
