Hi all. I noticed a noise when backing up and decided to see if any of you might know what it is?

You can barely hear it when the truck is in gear going forward and can definitely hear it when it's in reverse. It only makes the noise when in gear and the clutch is engaged.

Its a cheap part but you have to drop the trans to replace it, might as well put in a new clutch while you're at it if that turns out to be the issue.

Check your center support bearing on the rear driveshaft. The rubber could be so distorted that's it's rubbing on the driveshaft or the bearing has broke loose and is turning in the rubber.

Right now I'm going to rule out the throw out bearing for now since all research I'm doing shows that being the problem when the clutch is engaged, but this is happening when it is being disengaged. I will check the center support bearing. Is that also the carrier bearing?

Dry u-joints? Likely need to be lubed anyway.
Something coming into contact with the driveline? Gas tank skid ?

Here is me checking the carrier bearing. Could this be the noise?

its supposed to have some play as its got a rubber bushing in there but if the bushing is tore up or cracked it needs replaced. Hard to tell if the bearing is bad unless you lift the rear end off the ground and rotate the driveshaft. Even then it might not be noticeable. center bearing usually cause a noticeable vibration at driving speeds. Id go with greasing the ujoints if possible if they dont have zerks then most likely you need to replace the u-joints.

No zerks...I hand tested all of the u joints and there's really no play in them.

    My vote is u joint.

If you think its carrier bearing just spray some penetrating lube on both sides of it which should temporarily stop it from squeaking.

OP, did you ever get this one resolved? I have the same squeak in reverse and am trying to determine if it's the cardan joint or the carrier bearing.

Mine made that same noise. Wasn't sure if it was the u-joints or center bearing so I did all of them. Took care of it. The u-joint at the rear was toast, fyi. Front one seemed ok but I replaced it since I had the drive shaft out.

I have not figured out the noise yet. I plan on trying to use penetrating oil in the carrier bearing as it was mentioned on here or get my ujoints greased up to see if that does anything. What gave you the idea with it being a cardan joint vs a u joint? I ask because I didn't think of that one.

I took my rear driveshaft out to replace the rear-most u-joint to see if that would fix it (it didn't) and the cardan joint seemed to squeak when I moved it around. This thread has more info on trying to service it, but I haven't tried anything other than greasing the driveshaft zerks and pb blaster around the carrier bearing.

Just dealing with the squeaks for now, haha.

My father-in-law wants to troubleshoot it with me. He left soon after I posted this and gets back this weekend so hopefully sometime between now and next week we can figure out what's going on. Plus, a newborn and two other kids takes some time out of your schedule.

Just to update, I resolved my squeaking in reverse issues by rebuilding the double-cardan joint using this thread. Much harder than any normal u-joint replacement, even with the proper tools.

Awesome man glad to hear! That seems like a beast of a job...I just finished some troubleshooting and the sound is coming from the rear ujoint area but the ujoint is solid (no wiggle). We were thinking it could be we need to grease the zerks or a bearing in the differential could be going or needs a change of the rear diff fluid? Not sure...
