I have a 2005 and the motor was replaced on warranty shortly after I bought it new. It sounds like I need to replace it again. Is this a common problem? Is it the motor or could it be something else? What is the procedure for replacing it and is it difficult? What is a better replacement motor than a toyota one? Thanks

    Hi Paul,
I saw your post now in Oct. 2023, but didn’t see any follow up replies. I’m new here, so maybe it’s just me.
I have a 2001 Tacoma that I’ve had for 170k miles that has noisy, and I think slow wipers. I switched the motor with one from a parts truck with no change in noise. I’m thinking it might be the linkages in the mechanism that drives the wipers. The truck sat for a while, and the wipers only became an issue when I started driving it again.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe it is the linkages but after the first replacement motor it was quiet for a while and now it's louder again. Nothing I can't live with though. Thanks

Here's a dump of my wiper motor notes for my 2nd Gen 2010 Access Cab, 4 cyl, not TRD or Prerunner.

My problem is that my wipers started making a gear grinding noise after I turned on the wipers while they were frozen to the windshield back in February and they didn't break loose. I never fixed them and they've worked fine since then. They just make a gear grinding noise.

851100K060, 85110-0K060 is original motor for US and Mexico
8511004040, 85110-04040 is cold area spec motor
both fit my TRN225 truck according to parts.toyota.com
However, the linkages are different part numbers for US/Mexico vs. cold area. Perhaps that means the linkage has to match the motor.

The motor shaft is metal. The linkage socket mated to a -0K060 is metal.

There were a few sellers on eBay selling the used cold area motor and linkage as a kit.

85110-04040 has five pin plug, 3 over 2 contacts, mounts with two flanges, attaches to linkage with a spline/threaded connection.

Someone on TacomaWorld says all 2010 had cold weather spec parts:

See T-SB-0061-12 for instructions to remove the cowl panel and access the wiper motor and linkage.

This may be the grease for the wiper linkage:

Thanks for the informative replies. I almost decided I could live with the noise, but the idea of lubricating the linkages is tempting just to prove/disprove where the noise is coming from.

I was thinking the same thing about greasing the linkages to see where the noise is coming from. Thanks so much for the instructions.
