I'm considering Sunday. Looking like a foot of snow, so I'll wait until I see them open more trails. Black Friday left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hopefully there's some snow during XMas break. It's gotta be almost 10 years the last time I got to board on a weekday :(

Hey guys. East coaster here. The girlfriend and I are taking a trip to the Bay Area(staying in Berkeley) second week of Feb. Would love to get up and ski, even if for a half day. I've never been to the area so I'm wondering if it's realistic to do a day trip from Berkeley up to Tahoe to get a few turns in and then make it back down to Ber? Also we weren't planning on renting a 4x4 so where can I get with a standard rental car? Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

Considering Sunday as well. Gonna be cold as shit tomorrow. Low of -6

It's doable if it's not snowing. I've done day trips from the bay area, but it's a long ass day. Depending on where you wanna ski there are some resorts that are not as big that are a bit closer and can save you some drive time. Boreal is a favorite because it's right off 80 and they have night skiing on the front side and stay open till 8:00.

Plan on 2.5 hour drive time each way MINIMUM from Berkeley. Probably closer to 3 hours. If it's snowing, much longer. You can do it in a rental. Just be aware if the weather is inclement, chain control happens and you'd be responsible for buying and putting on cables/chains. It all depends on weather.

Thanks for the insight. Back in my twenties when I lived in Maine I used drive 3 hrs to the mountains, ski all day and drive 3 hrs home usually on shity roads(I love a road trip). Not so sure the old lady will be as willing to try that in our thirties and not so sure the rental car company is gonna be pumped about me putting chains on their car. Since I won't be bringing my own skis(sp?) what can I expect for rental charges and lift tickets midweek, roughly?

Don't even mention the chains to the rental company. Just play it by ear based on weather when you get here.
I haven't rented in so long I couldn't tell ya. Resorts always mark up more than the local shops. I'd say figure out where you want to ski and go from there.

I'm pretty sure he wants to rent skis, not chains.

I'm sure that a ton of us have the Epic pass, right? We should organize a big convoy to Heavenly in the next couple months, that way we can descend upon the casinos, too.

Doing a time lapse on my gopro right now. We'll see how it turns out in the morning

I'm a terrible snowboarder -- I pretty much re-learn from scratch every time I go -- but all the snowfall in the northern valley (Redding) has me excited to try again. Anyone else frequent Mt Shasta?

rental equipment rates can be found on the resort's website. They're usually about $35 for boots and skis/board. But like Jason said, you can probably find a local shop that'll ret out for $5-$10 cheaper and less of a wait time than the resorts.

lift tickets at the resorts can range from like $60-$100 depending on where you want to go, but there's a bunch of little deals you can get if you check out their websites. I know some Shell gas stations in the Tahoe area have a BOGO offer for weekdays, as long as you fill up there. Also, all the NorCal Costcos have pretty good lift ticket deals as well.
