I'd probably leave mine at the bottom of THAT hill to unload the quad and the chainsaw. I hope warranty is all good and you get your 4WD fixed. I've been having a blast in this *gasp* ten inches of snow we got in Seattle. Still don't like the diff whine but I love loud music. (haha.. you really are not a dude at all. But you must have some serious balls to take your TRD over that pile. Lift kit?)

The conditions vary from day to day, you don't know what it looks like until you're pulling up to it. I've tried to engage 4wd before, but there's not enough room. 4wd takes a little bit of room to engage, when I've tried before I'm already in the street, too late at that point. It really sounds like holding the traction control button 3 seconds stopped will solve my issue.

Then you’re doing something wrong if you can’t get 4wd to engage

Yeah I don't anticipate a problem....just have to adjust to something new. Not unlike the OP I guess. The lifted bigger tire AWD V8 T4R did get quite awful fuel mileage. 170k when we sold it and never touched a thing on the drivetrain other than fluid changes so not sure the wear and tear part is really true. Same goes for the thousands of miles I've put on Subies, but I get your point. I'm not wishing the Tacoma had AWD. An on-demand 4HI mode could be kinda cool though.

Well you know your conditions better than we do. If it were me sitting in a snowy lot I'd have it in 4HI when I pulled out of my parking spot and adjust once I was off snow if I knew there was a chance of the situation you mention. But yeah, maybe the double aid defeat will fix your problem.

It all depends on the situation. I have had traction control interfere negatively in a few situations

I have too, but the initial kill of traction control is because you're losing more traction than is safe for a road. If you are in weird terrain, you're supposed to turn that stuff off. Traction control isn't built for mud, it's built for the road.

You do realize Tacomas have traction control systems specifically designed for of road?

In my opinion, all of this traction control computer stuff is great for wet and icy conditions especially when they sneak up on you. Off road and in deep snow it’s nice to be able to hold the button to turn it all off.

GOOD LORD I have a life and didn't get back to the messages as we where out of service for 24 hours in the woods. As for trolling, thats a big negative, I legit wanted to know how to over ride a computer. The 1st gen was great in the very off road conditions yesterday. Yes, I used a pic above to show the roads aren't interstate winter weather conditions and no we wouldn't drive over them we carry power saws. Its extreme off road conditions that this 3rd cannot handle. The 3rd gen is broke down with only 11k miles on it and few hard snow days. Thats is unacceptable! We are pushing snow, on steep 1 lane logging roads unfortunately we thought since our 1st gen 280k miles could handle we would upgrade and have the same experience! Majority of the time I am just the passenger it is my husband and his 30+ year of being in the woods, hound hunting that we know this 3rd gen doesn't compare. We are in the market now of looking for a good condition 1st gen and will have modification done to build a rig that can actually perform.
But I hope you all have a great day keep on doing what you do best you douche canoes!

a vehicle's ability to 'push' snow has nothing to do with the computers.

#1 - tires - are you running stock tires on your 1st gen? doubt it
#2 - clearance - is your 1st gen stock suspensioned? again doubt it
#3 - 4wd - both have 4wd with the 3rd gen having a rear locker that can be engaged in 4lo, does your 1st gen have a rear locker?
#4 - lastly, defeating TC/VSC (which the 1st gen does not have) is as simple as being stopped and holding a button for 3 seconds. If you want to pull fuses, have fun.

I'm aware the computer has nothing to do with the snow level, its was to paint a picture to the dudes that couldn't comprehend we are up in the woods not a morning commute to the office.
#1 - negative not stock on either truck
    #2 - both stock suspension
#3 - Yes we have to go in 4low to use the rear lock, but we don't have to get to 4 low in the 1 gen.
#4 - we don't have the TC/VSC on 1st gen. We do hold the button for 3 sec to disengage we also use the ECT Power button. The truck looses powder and doesn't go as smoothly through switchback corners. In some conditions we use the MTS works better in the snow.

A straight up 4-wheel drive pickup we aren't pushing a buttons to get results. We are getting results in 4hi and something shift to 4 low. In the 3rd gen we have to find the right button pushing sequence to achieve some below average results. On top of that the 3rd gen already has a warranty repair now needed on the 4-wheel drive. My frustration is can't get it done in the woods and now I couldn't even use it for a work commute.
