Odd shudder?

    I have a 2005 i-4 5 speed 4x4. I went up in the mountains yesterday and there was about a foot of snow and whenever i would drive in 4lo i would get a bad shudder and my shifter would jerk back and forth violently. it felt like my diff was slipping or my tranny. Every time this happened i would stop and turn around because i feel like im doing damage. so i was wondering is this bad or does anybody know what is going on. If anyone has the same problem can you tell me what is happening and what you did to solve this problem.
