Surprised that the OEM rack can only hold 100lbs. That's not very much.

Anyone with a "genuine OEM rack"... Is the rack labeled/branded 'Toyota' anywhere? A part number maybe? Any way to make sure it's a genuine part and not some cheap Chinese knock-off?

I'm just curious cause I bought a "genuine" OEM rack off a Toyota parts dealer through Amazon, and looking the part over, I just can't imagine it's a real OEM part. I'm trying to figure out if I got sent a cheap Chinese knockoff or not. Toyota isn't in the business of producing parts with this poor of fitment. No OEM manufacturer is.

I did mine today. No problems at all on drivers side. Right hand side is completely f'd up. The bolt for the passenger side that holds the ball joint every time I try to screw it in the nut on the inside pops out. Only way to get it is remove the entire thing again then tape it in place so it doesn't happen again. Second time the two shortest screws they hold the plastic to the bracket near the ball joint completely stripped out. Not sure what the heck to do about now.

I will probably have to go pay the dealerships to fix.

You try super glueing the nutplate in place?

What I think is amusing is the Toyota instructions say no gap should be more than 1.5 mm, (0.06) inch, which I believe is laughable and impossible given the design and manufacturing process of these
Also what is interesting is they supply a washer to prevent water from coming in the sides to the shaft of the bolt, but they don't worry about water intrusion from the head of the bolt to the shaft.
A good torque wrench is a must.

When I first installed mine I had trouble getting that yellow plastic piece into the bracket. I need to redo the entire side and now it's even worse. I've even had to retap 2 holes cuz the bolts would thread in after taking them out. This is turning out to be a huge pain in the ass.

hey guys did your oem roof rack come with some sort of silicone sealer? There are water leaks coming from both seatbelts inside and I think its from the 2 bolts on top.

    Bumpy bump.

Roof rack is enroute. I also sourced a roll of butyl sealant tape to help seal things up. Does anyone have any experience with this method?

I just poured some silicone in the bolt holes before I bolted everything down. It's been dumping rain and no problems

That was my plan, then I came across the tape idea. I'll figure it out when I get to it.

Just got my roof rack today so will be giving the installation a shot next week when the weather is supposed to be somewhat better. Printed out the PDF of the installation instructions, so between those and this thread, I'm hoping that even I can't screw this up! The local Dealership would want almost $160 to install it, AND the service writer I talked to on the phone actually thought you had to take the headliner out of the truck to install the rack!!
