OEM Toyota Transfer case - Oil Part Number

    I’m looking at replacing my transfer case oil, manual says
    SAE-75W-90 GL-5,

    All I can find for genuine Toyota oil is 75W, 08885-8100

    Does anyone know what the original oil used by Toyota is, along with the part number?

    Id just use Valvoline 75-w90 GL-5. It will meet all specs that the more expensive Toyota oil will.


    Oil is oil. Chances are theyre both made by the same refinery.

    I have been using Wolfshead Products for years with no problems .

    Local Pa Company

    I doubt even my Local Toyota dealer uses Toyota Lube unless they can buy it in bulk

    I'm going to give you more info than you wanted, but since it's all related, I hope you find it useful... I just happened to write this up when the following question was asked in a different thread.

    For oil - if you want to use synthetic, then MT-90 is a good choice and you can run it in all four locations. It's not cheap however, so I'd recommend using dino-oil where you can - our diffs/transfer case are more than happy to run Lucas 80W-90, even at cold temps.

    Personally - and I just did this on Friday as part of my new-year fluid changes (I drive ~30K miles/yr, mix of highway/dirt) - I put the Lucas 80W-90 in my front diff, t-case, and rear diff, and I put MT-90 in my manual transmission.

    As far as amounts... as usual, fill until oil starts coming out of fill hole.
    • You'll likely need 5-6 quarts to do the front diff (~1.2qt), rear diff (~2.8qt), t-case (~1.1qt). (I got away with a gallon, which is cheaper + 1 qt)
    • You'll need 3 quarts (but won't use all of it) for the manual transmission. Buy 4 quarts, it's a lot cheaper. Or 12 quarts for even more savings)
    As far as the crush washers go, this kit is often the best deal you'll find - price wise. I think you still need to get the transmission crush washers in addition to this though.

    One last thing - when you're doing the front diff, you might consider replacing the drain plug with one that uses a 14mm hex head, rather than the OEM 10mm allen key. For me at least, it makes removal much less stressful.

    Thank you for the research and time you to to compile this. It will be very helpful to many people and should be a sticky thread if it isn't already. Please add to ALWAYS remove the fill plug before the drain plug. Many cases of draining oil only to find the fill plug has become one with the case to the point of chiseling and welding to remove the fill plug. Thanks.

    Just fill it till it trickles out of the filler opening...all the things that take gear oil are like this (diffs, tcase, manual trans)

    I see the same washer/gasket and crush washer #'s (in your Amazon link) in this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/front-diff-and-transfer-case-oil-change-howto.147631/ but it is in a 2nd gen section.

    Just want to confirm that they are the same part numbers for a 1st gen?

    Also would you happen to know the 1st gen manual tranny part #s?

    The 12 pc Amazon plug washers has tranny washers included. I used them from Amazon last summer

    Yes, same washer/gasket for 1st gen and 2nd gen in this regard. I generally find that I can reuse the crush washers on the MT, but if you want to replace, the part number you are looking for is 90430-18008/90430-A0003, and you need two of them. You could get this kit, which will do the front diff, rear diff, transfer case, and MT.

    I was able to source all the goodies from the parts girl at my local Toyota dealership.

    The hexhead front diff. replacement plug was certainly shorter by threads and the magnet was not as strong as the stock OEM plug.
    I had no issues getting the stock plug off.
