    All stock, baby!
I had an order going at McGeorge and they had the TRD oil filter (PTR43-00080) at a significant discount and I added a couple to my cart. They arrived today and I noticed that the filter internals are rattle around. Same situation on both, so just curious for those that have used these filters in the past whether that's normal. Never noticed this in any oil filter I've ever handled.

I haven't changed the oil in the truck since I bought it (only 1K miles on the last oil change) so I don't know if the regular OEM filter does that as well. Probably normal but seemed best to check.

What is the difference between a stock oem filter and a TRD Pro? Appearance or internals ?

No it doesn’t. If it came from McGeorge it’s legit OEM.

discounting $17 to $12 + shipping for a small oil filter is not a great deal
    OEM is like $6

maybe one is fleece and one is paper inside or something, when all should have been fleece to begin with, as other manufacturers have done for over 20 years.
Or maybe it's a metal baffle inside. I don't know. Never cut one apart. Probably won't.
It is awfully small, despite room for larger. Other cars all use bigger ones.
I'm not sure if that's just their way of increasing oil capacity, or if added filtration media is actually needed.
For example, if oil capacity is 4L on a vehicle and you put a big oil filter, it might bump that to 4.3L or more.
That's more of a problem on small turbo engines that don't fit much oil, because too little, and it sludes.
Taco though has no turbo, and is a low power ~220hp N/A motor at about 5.5qt

Then it's a "legit OEM" filter with something loose inside that they discounted the price on. Just checked a box of qty 10 90915-YZZD3 OEM filters and none of them rattle.

You do realize yours is a different part number and a different filter than the OPs, right?

Here’s a cut apart of the TRD filter:

    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/toyota-trd-filter-cut-open.135143/#post-1943117
Could be the sound when shaken is just the metal screen against the inner column, but understand why the OP asks the question.
Bottom line- someone whose actually used the TRD filters or has one on hand could answer the OPs question . It’s not gonna be you or me.

I’ve bought many things from McGeorge Toyota online, they are a reputable dealership in Virginia and have some of the best prices online. If there is anything wrong with a part they sell it could be returned.

Yeah.. i realize mines different... that's why i posted my part number. Bottom line- i've used alot of different oil filters over the last 50 years and none had something loose inside... just saying. Does that make it defective... i couldn't say.

same here. see my edit I’m thinking it could be that metal screen against the inner column, quite different than filters I’ve used before, so would be good to hear from someone else who has a TRD filter.

OP, save yourself the (potential) grief, and return the TRD filters that rattle to the seller. Spin on oil filters contain a number of different "moving" parts; by-pass valves, anti-drain back and anti-siphon valves (depending on filter specs), but not "loose" parts. I would NEVER install a spin on oil filter, from any mfr that "rattled".

I've got a message into McGeorge about them. I'll report back with their response.

    Got a reply from McGeorge:

Come to think of it, the sound isn't unlike those "widgets" inside cans of Guinness that release nitrogen when you pop one open. Oil is brown... Guinness is brown... hmmm...

    Thanks all for the discussion.

Don't most modern oil filters have pressure relief valves? I'm still kind of curious why this particular type is rattling.

I say you cut it open and let us know. :D

The TRD oil filter is just a relabelled K&N oil filter. Another marketing gimmick for Toyota to pad their TRD catalog with, in order to separate fools from their money.
