Labor Charge for this should be 1.5 hours, 2 hours at the most with the tool. It is basically whatever the charge for replacing a CV axle plus 30 minutes. Now if the diff is dropped your looking at 3-3.5 hours. Our labor rate is $80 an hour so that should give you a range.

I tough on 2gen front diff if you split case you need to make sure R&P has correct backlash because case acts as giant bearing holder.

No, I thought he split the case because the needles were lost inside. Someone else removed the bearing from the outside when this happened before so why split the case?

Below is the post where he explains what happened.

As for the 'someone else' you were referring to, he hammered the crap out of the bearing race to get it to finally break into pieces, and by doing so, he damaged the carrier. Not everyone is willing to take a BFH to their differential.

Anyone in OC Ca. done this? I'd like to do it but being my daily driver I'd feel more comfortable with an experienced hand helping. beer and cash provided. BTW Toyota denied my claim after taking it in for this because of lift - its ok because we all know the problem would return anyway.

After reading through the majority of this thread, I'm certain I have this issue. I can feel a shudder/undulating vibration coming from the front of the truck from take off up til about 35-40 mph, as we well as coming to a stop, and it goes away when I engage the 4 wheel drive. I just lifted my truck w/ OME 885's and Dakars, and I felt the vibes as soon as I drove it. I plan on ordering the new bushing and tool. Forgive me for my lack of knowledge when it comes to this stuff, but how would I know if I need to replace anything else? Such as a new CV axle, bearing, etc.? I can't stand the vibration and I want to get this fixed ASAP, and do it right the first time.

I'd replace the CV axle just to be safe since you have an older truck. I had the vibe the second I lifted my truck as well. One more thing to consider for you is 'takeoff shudder'. If your truck hesitates and shudders slightly when accelerating form a full stop, then this is another issue you may want to address as well. Check to see if you have the CB drop...if not get one...and if that still doesn't work, like mine, then going to a one piece DS will fix this problem. I had one fab'd up using part of my existing DS for less than 250 bucks. You'll be riding smooth in no time.:D

Thanks for the reply. I installed the CB drop, as well as the diff. drop when I installed the lift. Some members on here have recommended that I remove the diff. drop and see what happens. Haven't had the chance to do that yet, but from all the research I've done, it doesn't really make a difference on the 2nd gens. As far as replacing the CV axle, I think I'll contact CVJ axles, as others have done in this thread. Thanks

do you guys just engage your 4 wheel drive on the pavement going straight to see if the vibe goes away. Cause I dont know if i could notice it on the dirt or a gravel road?

Yes, that's the best place to test it for this. Find a smooth, straight section of road and engage. Give it a moment to observe the change, then disengage to confirm it returns. It'll be like night and day.

Just ordered a bushing, tool, and seal. Pretty excited to see if this is gonna work for me. It was recommended that I replace the CV axle while I'm at it to be on the safe side. The truck has close to 80k miles on it. Should I just go ahead and get two new axles? Or should the passenger side be okay? Thoughts?

Just leave the passenger side one alone. That one is definitely not required.

Ugh, this stupid issue haunts me. I got mine fixed over 5k ago and even now, i still swear I feel it, but I'm pretty sure its just my tires, doesn't go away in 4WD lol. Waiting for it to return :( Could be wheel bearings for all I know.

I purchased a new cv axel from advanced auto just incase and when I did the bushing I notices scoring marks on it so I replaces it. This will stop from tearing the bushing up. If you don't need it just return it.

Hey, Just wanted to add my results. My 2005 had 65000 miles on it when I lifted it 1.75 in the front with billes, and 1.5" in the back with an add a leaf.
Got the vibe right away. Drove the truck for 16000 miles with the vibe until putting the bushing in this weekend, and there was no wear on the CV shaft. Put in a bushing and new seal, took about two hours total and it's as smooth as can be.
Couldn't be happier. The puller works great. I just unbolted the lower ball joint, pulled the caliper and tied it all out of the way.
To get the shaft out past the clip in the dif, I drove two pry bars in between the CV joint and the case to put some tension on things, and took a punch and gave the joint a hit.
Popped right out. The rest was totally straight forward.
Been a while since my truck has ran this good.
Thanks Chase for a great product.

Which write up are you looking for? There are videos and written instructions with pictures in this thread for the needle bearing removal/bushing install, as well as on the ECGS website, and their facebook page. I've also seen write-ups with pictures on how to remove the cv axle. I just did a quick search and this is the first thing that came up:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...axle-replace-front-wheel-bearing-2nd-gen.html

there are others floatin around out there too. good luck
