I want to find an fj80 front axle and sas it. Also going to source a gear driven xfer case from a mini truck and use an adapter plate to avoid any electronics in the conversion. Just focusing on transmission rebuild research atm. It's an a340e 4sp auto.

I really haven't decided anything other than sas-ing it for the front end. I may go with a non toyota axle and keep it a 5-lugger.

I've been researching different build threads out there and trying to come up with a good plan. I like the idea of going 3 link or radius arm bc I recently found out about this crossmember.. which has to be replaced either way on our trucks to accept the transfer case. When you start reading what other people have done you start realizing you have a lot of options. I even saw where one guy did leave springs with hangers forward. Send me the thread your talking about, and Ill take a look.

Wow u got me second guessing long travel and going this route instead. That cross member is such a good option for us.

Might have already seen it but here is the one i was referring to

Yes please! I was looking (and found 2 options) for a steel wheel with stock bore width big enough to handle big brake upgrade. I think that's what you are using but details would be awesome.

You can, but mine is 2000 and only accepts transmissions made within roughly that year, due to changes in design. It's also California emissions which makes it even more difficult to source a replacement in the middle of Texas. Even the California titled truck I robbed parts from recently had federal emissions. I'm also approaching 300k miles and the transmission could use a good rebuild and a shift kit. (While also hopefully retaining CA legality if I ever decide to move there) I just got tired of seeing replacement transmissions that likely would bolt up but have issues after installed, so I just bit the bullet and decided to rebuild. Don't worry it'll be fun!

Um im almost certain the transmission has no differences across emission regulations

Also 2000 should be able to accept 95-02 transmissions unless its all different for 5 lugs

The CA pan is different bc of dipstick tube design having to route around different orientation in stock headers between emission standards. Also, the shifter linkage is different bc I have a column shifter rather than a floor shifter. Yes these can be swapped over, but again problems finding the parts. The 95.5-98 are all swappable. The 99 is unique, the 2000 is unique. Transmissions from 01-04 I have read are different. I could dig up the specifics, but throttle body differences, number of solenoids, and throttle control are all different aside from being a bolt on fit. This can also be confirmed with some searching and using car-part.com to get an idea of the parts interchange between year models.

Thanks for clarifying.. I just didn't want to take any chances and couldn't find any testimonials where someone had tried to swap outside the parts interchange. Not saying it wouldn't work, but truck may shift differently than before due to design differences. I guess if it bolts on and doesn't throw any codes your good in a sense, but just didn't want to risk it.

Not my truck, but anytime I spot a first gen stepside 5-lug gotta snap a photo. They are such rare beauties.

I knew somebody was gonna ask.. lol. If and when I sas, I'll hit you up. I'm still a long ways away and it could be a couple of years. Dare I say it.. truck gets wrecked or something, I'll prolly part it out after settling up with insurance. Not just gonna let the downey kit go to waste. I bought it used from @Tour991, repainted all the parts, and really enjoy it. They are super hard to find after downey shut down. There's still other options out there, though, if you look through the 5-lug suspension lift sticky thread.
