Narrower tire but higher side walls then? How big of a difference is 255 from 265? What is that millimeters?

I've asked this same thing myself.
Answer is yes and no. It's more of an aspect ratio for their sizing.

You will have to cut the fender back where the mudflaps are

And I doodled that because it's accurate and it's a good way to show all the new people on tacomaworld how annoying this question is when a simple search will result in the answer.

@Tantaco37 you have the exact same truck as Josh, DCSB Off Road. So 255/85 r16 should fit the same-ish.

That size is just limited to about 6 total different tires to choose from. 265/75 r16 is more plentiful. Also think about rotational mass, tire weight, contact patch size, and rolling resistance.
Obviously, the patch size and rolling resistance will most likely be less on the skinnier 255 tire. Rotational mass and weight are dependent on load ratings, plies, etc.

You'll have to take a sledgehammer to the long area circled (it's a pinch weld)
And then I highly recommend using a sealant afterwords to keep any leaks from forming

Tire rub has less to do with tire diameter and more to do with the scrub angle, which is effected by tire and rim width when turning.

I cut my pinch weld completely off (with cut off wheel) Then I mig welded the seam. Then the sealant.....

No leaks. Looks better than a hammer attack.

I’ve looked in the past and there definitely not many 255 out there. I appreciate the advise!

No sweat. I'm a 4 cylinder, so I look at all those things a bit more closely since I have a 40 mile round trip commute to work 5 days a week

There’s a 99% chance of me not beating my truck with a sledge hammer. Really don’t want to trim anything

If it helps at all... The nicest thing about having a commute, mine is 40 miles round trip, is that it helps keep work at work. That 30 minute drive home helps me set aside silly work things and focus on home things. Knowing that there is 20 miles preventing me from doing work when I'm at home is a damn good feeling.

    @Tantaco37

I didn't have to do anything to get these to fit. If you're not into mud tires the ST Maxx's are a great choice too.

Afaik this is the only possible way to put 33s on our trucks without smashing/trimming/cutting something. Just beware that I did this on stock off-road wheels and changing your offset or backspace may cause you to rub.

Also as stated Im a mall crawler. When we do go to meets I stick to the trails that are easier than a driveway, and don't go more than 5 mph. I do talk a bunch of shit about how awesome I am all the time though!

Nah, he's right, the 255 is just the width of the tire. So a 265 is 10mm wider than a 255.

Here's how this works. The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number tells you the distance from the wheel to the edge of the tire (so basically the sidewall), as a ratio to the width. Third number is just nominal wheel size. Here's an example:

    255/85/16

These Tires are 255 millimeters wide.

The distance from the wheel to the edge of the tire is 255 * .85 which = 216.75mm, or 8.53 inches.

This means that your total tire diameter is 8.53 inches for each side of the wheel, then 16 inches for the wheel itself. 8.53 + 16 + 8.53 = 33.06 inches. We know that 255's are ~33s, so the math checks out.

I assume the reason you get some variance on different manufacturers 33s actually being 33.5 or 32.9, etc, is because they choose a different point in the tread to call the 'edge' of the tire.
