I'm a "maybe" on my own trail ride! I've posted this on the Midwest Overlanders FB page and got a good bit of response. Trying to make it clear that I'm only going if the roads are good and it ISN'T raining. That place can be nasty slick when it's wet. Used to ride dirt bikes there back in the '80's before it was an Indiana "State Recreation Area"

I'm in that same boat. Not worth the risk of a 3+ hour drive in bad conditions to only put my truck in worse conditions of a muddy trail haha

Anyone have any experience with Plasti Dip or the Rust-oleum equivalent? Not really liking the chrome grille but don't know how long that stuff lasts, I know it peels off and is temporary but is it actually a valid option? Not going to chip after a long drive or anything like that?

The only thing I've put it on is a TRD skid plate. Painted it with aluminum paint, then with Plasti-dip dullcoat. It's held up for a year and a half. Several pretty good impacts against rocks and dirt.

I've heard nothing much sticks for long to the "plastic chrome" grill surrounds though. Too slick....

I used Plasti-Dip on the wheels of my Mazda 3, no prep work done at all. It peeled pretty badly when I had tires put on it, so I peeled the majority off. It was on for over a year without much issue. Peeled even more off when I traded it for the Tacoma, because I was nice I guess. Hindsight, I would've left it on there since they wouldn't wiggle on the price of the truck, give me tires, or window tint lol. I was too cheap to have the wheels painted and too scared to spray them myself.
A good friend and I did his wheels, grille, badges, and nerf bars on his Avalanche about 3 years ago. The Dip has held up very well on it, but we did do prep work in this case. It could use a light touch up here and there. He got new tires put on, by a different shop, they didn't scuff his all to hell like mine. He touched up the edge and can't even tell it.

What I did have some luck with...was using outdoor plastic paint for furniture or similar. Painted the very faded 'silver' grille on my first truck flat black. Paint was either Krylon or DupliColor. I sanded all the leftover paint off and scuffed up the rest really well. Worked up to 800 grit paper before I sprayed. About 3 coats later and it was done.
Would show you but I don't see the grille in any of these pics, sadly, the only ones I have of my first truck https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/dirty-deeds-deeds-done-dirt-cheap.459509/page-3#post-13608634

    Cool, Where about?

My grill and back bumper is done in it. It's been done for about 3-4 years now. Everyone now and then about once a year i'll touch up the front grill really quick from the bugs and everything but the back bumper I've touched up once since I've put it on there..

I appreciate the input guys. Sounds like this stuff holds up better than I think it will. I mean I don't plan on using my grille like Bluegrass' skid plate or anything.

Any prep other than a solid cleaning? Would rather not scuff up the grille incase I sell it down the line but I do plan to paint pretty far past the edges to give it some grip.

Just wash it before you apply it. Really easy to get the grill off so I would just take it off to paint it so you don't have to tape for overspray on the hood. When I peel mine the grill looks brand new behind the plasti dip.

I recommend taking it off when you spray for a better coverage. A light sanding will make it stick better than NOT sanding. But I see where you're coming from.

When in times of need, learn to do for yourself!

I've been trying to tune a CB radio for better reception. There are but a very few CB shops in the area, and NONE of them want to work on anything outside. So....Got a new (better than my old one) SWR meter and learned a few tricks (via U-Tube video's) Changed to a higher quality mic...(Cost more than the entire radio!) Then watched another video on how to jack up the modulation. Did that too! finally, ran a better ground to my antenna mount. Now my little (cheap) Cobra radio will rattle the windows of anyone close by!

Increased effective range from a mile or so to where I was talking with someone last night 2 states away.

    That's a big 10-4 Good Buddy!
