89 have forward shift, 85-88 are top shift.

 

I got a spare off of my 04 auto tacoma. Shipping may be wild tho

Part MC but mostly trail gear.

 

So MC gears with TG adapters I assume? Many are running that combo, seems to be working just fine for those as long as you're running MC coupler.

 

Yes, the TG coupler splines are taller than the MC coupler ones and are a tight fit on MC input splines

You switch to a one piece rear drive shaft after this mod? I’m leaning towards Tom woods. The front I’m not as concerned with (eventually sas).

 

I kept a two piece so I could use junkyard shafts and make finding spares/new ones easy

 

Stayed 2 piece to help keep it out of the rocks

 

Yep. 2 piece provides better clearance and the CSB actually help absorbed vibration as well.

Something like this would be kool.

 

one piece. Shafts can be had from the rear of the 3rd gen 4runners with double cardan joint that bolt right up to the fj case. I get them from the pick n pull for $50 a pop. Just have to redrill the rear pinion for the 60x60 pattern or swap out to a double drill pattern which is easy if you have a solid collar installed on the rear diff. Negligible loss on clearance if you do the math due to shortening the rear shaft by 8.5”, at least on an access cab. My rear shaft length came out to 60” at ride height.

Bonus is that you get rid of that foolish carrier bearing and gain a zerk on the slip joint, all while retaining OEM Toyota parts.

 

Went to do the first oil change on my crawlbox after putting ~1400 miles on it.
I figured I'd see a little bit of metal in it from the gears breaking in & all that. But this is much more than a little bit.....
It seems to be aluminum considering the magnet on the fill & drain plug didn't have that much on them.

Unless this is normal after the first oil change, looks like I'm gonna have to pull it back out and see what tf is going on.
Thoughts anyone?

 

Weird.... after my initial break in, my oil looked so good I seriously considered dumping right back in. Since then I've drained it out multiple times to try to fix leaks or deal with other issues and never saw anything like that.

Sounds like something is grinding on or into the case housing, but not so bad it's making enough noise that you can hear it.

 

Yea I thought I was home free on my duals, but apparently not...

It makes some interesting noises on acceleration/decel & whatnot, but I figured that's just the nature of these things.
My mpg hasn't changed, so it's not like anything is grinding hard enough to cause significant resistance & impact that.
Everything free-spun well on the bench before install.

Didn't think of grinding on the actual housing. I was more thinking of grinding on either of the adapters. Could be that too though. Hmmm
