The only trails I have really done with both cases are the alpine loop and all the passes out by telluride (Black Bear, Imogene, etc) but none of them really have anything obstacle-wise that even warrants the crawlbox so I wouldn't say that's a great comparison. I guess it's worth mentioning that I blew out a wheel cylinder on black bear pass and lost my brakes a few years ago just as we got down to the top of the switch backs. Long story short I wound up driving down the switchbacks using the marlin box and my e-brake to control speed. When I went back and did black bear this past year with the NWF box and fully functioning brakes, all I could think of was how stupid I was that I could never have done that without brakes using the NWF setup.

Between @Tacofire98 and I it sounds like you could try out both crawlboxes before you buy and make a decision from there.

I'm having a hard time understanding this...what's your setup? Are you not running 2.57 toyota gears in your rear case?

I do think I stalled it at least once on Pritchett. :notsure:

Lower gearing won't help you if you're stuck on your belly. :stirthepot: :p

I’m going to an FJ80 passenger drop front axle so I’m running an NWF box with my factory 2.57 in and then an RF1A gear box behind it with 23 spline 4.7’s in it.

Maybe I should give them a call, I am currently in my 10th week. Ordered 2/10.

IMO for some people who have wheeled as hard of the stuff they have on their setups without a crawl box AND a manual it's shown that even the crawl box isn't NEEDED but it sure does make some things more enjoyable. I for one do not enjoy some local black trails because of the constant clutch work. I get through fine but I'm exhausted by the end of it working the clutch over every big boulder. I don't think I'll regret going NWF at all between my 5.29's and the NWF setup. Not to mention flat belly alone makes up for what I would call something I would only need extremely rarely (4.7's) vs the benefit of a flat belly that is relevant like all the time.

I ordered 12/27 and it delivered 2/23. So 8 weeks and 2 days from order to delivery. Although having just talked to them on the phone last week about them shipping the shafts back, it sounds like they're swamped right now. Bunch of people must've gotten their taxes and ordered boxes. lol

Did you do any body lift, or just rebuild the entire tunnel and some floorpan?

No body lift. I had to cut a big ass hole in the floor and patch it back in.

Any interference to the seat? And I'm assuming you're a manual? I'm hesitant to cut out my floor and re-build it, but at the same time... I'm about to build the crossmember and would rather only do it once. lol

And did you have any issues on the front end of the tunnel by the bellhousing with the exhaust? I'd think moving everything up that much would cause issues there too. My trans pan is super low..

This is on my 1st gen manual, so not sure how helpful any of that info would be.

Mine's a 3rd gen runner automatic, so not far off. I'd imagine it's an almost identical floor pan.

    Ah,

Seat rail clearance is super tight! I have Corbeau seats and brackets though, not sure how it would compare to stock anymore.

No issues with the exhuast, aside from deleting the 2nd cat for more clearance for my new crossmember.

There was a handful of other small issues I ran into like fuel filter and ebrake bellcrank clearance.

All good info. Thanks! Got my exhaust cut out to re-build to clear the new driveshaft and crossmember anyways, that second cat probably won't go back on as it's some shitty aftermarket high flow and throws a code anyways. Already thinking about moving that fuel filter too.

Then it's just time to put a real front end under the truck so that you don't have to sweat an inch of belly clearance anymore :)

*at the expense of requiring a tow pig or a lot of time and money to be streetable for long distances comfortably.

Besides it's more fun keeping up with SAS rigs on IFS and making it up the same shit even if we don't take the same exact line.

    Ookkkkaayy :)

I do believe a crawlbox to be a better dollar for dollar mod than a SA but I'm pretty sure @slander has twice the amount of money into his lefty than he does his SAS and he drives everywhere.

Beat mod hands down. Super low gears are like wheeling with the cheat codes on.

Yea trucks a DD with the crawl box.

But your stuck with 35s. Unless you absolutely destroy the firewall. And have to be pretty mindful of tire direction and throttle control. For the type of crawling I enjoy, the Tacoma would benefit from 37s and a flat belly. Which would entail a SAS.

But I did install a crawlbox in the truck, twice, before a SAS has happened. Never will wheel a manual without gears again.
