Gotcha. Guess that will limit my shifter placement options as well.

The old crawlboxtacobox models from Marlin and Inchworm were clock able "360*". But with issues sealing, that has gone away to just a normal 0* mounting for the chain drive tcase.

Spend some time looking in the Crawlbox thread on here. Lots of good tech information. Also look into RADesigns triple stick setup. I used this setup and then modified it to get the placement of my shifters. Aka getting the shifters to come through a single couple holder, clearance, etc.

No more clickable cases, they were leaky and tricky to install.

Shifters land where they land unless you want to go to a linkage setup like Radesigns. I kept mine single stick, straight through the floor so that I always knew it was going to work and I wouldn’t be laying under my truck messing with a linkage on the trail. Pic below...excuse my groceries lol.

Theoretically you shouldn’t have to mess with your belly pan. Depends on how much of an angle the stock engine and tcase sit. The crawler doesn’t lower it at all by design, just pushes it straight back

I'll have to figure out how to make it only take up a single cup holder since I don't have the console with the side cup holders like yours. I think I can make it work though! We'll see. Good point about the reliability

After an hour or so, you'll be cursing by the time you bend the shifter to fit so it won't bind

So I was looking through this thread: And saw triple stick setup all stuffed into the stock location. 5 speed with j shift. Wondering how to accomplish this with a non triple stick setup?

Yeah I know, I think the place he ordered from is out of business because the website 404s.

    Saw this:
    https://www.davezoffroadperformance.com/store/triple-shifter.html

Would I need to get the "forward shift crawl box" option? Or is dual stick not an option and I have to use triple sticks to get everything in the shifter area?

So does triple stick basically "convert" a j shift pattern from the stock tcase to two front/back shifting sticks (one for 2/4wd and one for hi/lo)?

That's the only way to get all the shifters in the factory location?

Also I guess I just used a bad link bc their website is still up

    Keep researching.

You can convert a j-shift case to twin stick by removing the interlock pin and filing down the shift rails to allow them to clear each other. It needs to be done for triples as well. I went with a single crawl box shifter and twins coming up through a cup holder. I also have an auto which is way harder to make triples work with or I might have gone that route. I had Radesigns make my twin stick set-up and it's a quality piece of hardware. If you want to have the Radesigns Triples call or email Rory and ask him for a copy of the install directions.

Whatever set-up you end of going with for shifters you might also want to pick up a spare j-shift case. I did for a few reasons. One is that my rig is also my DD. Two is that it allowed me to build the duals on my bench and test everything before install. Three is that I now have a spare stock case and driveshafts. If my duals ever fail all I have to do is pull them and put my stock case and shafts back in to get it on the road again.

Thanks and good point on having a spare tcase. If going triple sticks is the only way to get everything in the factory location then I'll likely go that route. I'll def email him and get a copy of the installation manual so I can see what all is involved.

Can definitley convert a chain drive tcase. - https://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/twin-stick/

Triple sticks really allows you to have all the shifters (crawlbox shifter in the center, factory tcase L-H on the left, factory 2-4wd on the right) all in a neat packaged area without having shifters everywhere. Your crawlbox will always need to be a top shift tcase, when you receive your tacobox from marlin, this will already be setup.

@ThunderOne You will need todo 2 different steps, first being modify your tcase to allow for the shift rods to fully move independent of each other (aka grinding the numb down and removing the shift lock deten pin (pill)) After that you will need to grind the shift rail flush on top to remove the top numb that is in most of the shift rail castings. (see RADesigns install below) . Then you will use the triple sticks bracket bolted to the crawlbox shifter housing and will relocate your factory tcase shifters using threaded rods and rod ends.

This pic from RAD designs shows the triple stick mounting based attached to the crawlbox housing. Then center shifter is strictly (L-N-H) for the crawlbox only, either engaged in low or disengaged in 1:1 high. The threaded rods and rod ends relocate where the shifters normally would be on the factory chain tcase and relocate them to the shifter base on the crawlbox.

    Install info from RADesigns http://nebula.wsimg.com/ee317827726...BA896CE942FEBA752&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

hey thanks! Do I need to order a triple stick kit if I already get a shifter that comes with Marlin's tacobox or do I just need to order the "twin stick" kit to convert my tcase only? (like what you linked first)

EDIT nevermind, I see that a triple stick kit is required because the twin stick doesn't have a spot in the middle for the crawlbox shifter

So hopefully someone here has ran into this and has a solution
I have this sitting and home ready to install
    IMG_0580.jpg

but then I pulled my transfer case to find this It appears to be a j shift but with a forward shifter
(not my picture, but mine looks the same)
    1997-04-Toyota-Tacoma-2000-04-Tundra-_57.jpg

I guess the question is can I just cut the front rails and (try to) drill a hole to move the shift fork into the rear opening or what else can I do?

@ToyRyd04 do you know if there are any other write ups on 1st gen triple stick install? Mostly wanting to see better pics of this part:

    upload_2019-4-1_11-1-26.jpg

also did you need to beat back the tranny tunnel any or did you already have a BL?
also also.. in the pic you posted I'm seeing a breather going from the tcase to the tranny? Is that what a lot of people do?

Marlin is telling me the I4 case is 26 spline and I’ll need to swap to a 23 spline transfer case from a V6 truck. Is this accurate?
