Pardon my ignorance here but anyone install an oil catch can on their 2.7 taco?

I just got one and for the life of me I can't find what hoses to remove and connect to the the can.

Seen some posts on here of v6 guys installing them and catching quiet a bit of oil that would've been sent back through the intake if not for the catch can.

Figured it'd be a good thing to add.

Regardless of motor size, I'm sure there is oil being blown back through my intake.

I had one on my 1st gen 2.7 for about 3 weeks. Very little oil/sludge was 'caught', so I removed it. Fun project, though.

It was in-line with the PCV hose.

    Thread Resurrection!

I am also looking for info on adding a catch can to a 2tr. I found these diagrams on TW somewhere...

    pcv%20location_zpscuy1bj9r_6af2172cb3085b66053f455ff37e19e1f1ff0e53.jpg

    pcv%20specifics_zpsyi6aivbd_c79ff1107deee1be7ea4e3038d31ebc24b9e3b9b.jpg

So in the second image it seems pretty clear that the PCV (or what Toyota calls the "Ventilation Valve") is located on the back left of the valve cover as you look at the front of the engine.

It follows from A through a rubber elbow, then through a metal pipe to B at another rubber elbow, then into the intake manifold. Pretty straight forward to add your can in the loop somewhere.

My main question is the small pipe with outlets labeled C and D. Are these hooked to the PCV circuit or are they independent? I'm guessing that C and D make a tiny closed loop unto themselves and are not connected in any way to the PCV circuit. Anyone know for sure?

And if anyone out there has an oil catch can on a 2tr, we'd love to see pics!

Dammit.. I totally forgot about this.. And I'm not at home with the truck right now either.

If I remember Ill take a pic this weekend.

I just changed the oil last week too and dumped out the catch can.. it had a decent amount in it too after 8000km.

I just plumbed mine right from the PCV to the catch can then back to the pipe ('A' on your diagram). It didn't matter to me where any other feeder tubes go since I was catching the crap prior to getting that far downstream.

That's a good point. If the oily air hit the can first it wouldn't matter where it went after that.

Thanks man! Guess I was over thinking... a rare problem for me...

Pictures of my install. I mounted an ADD W1 can on the passenger side fire wall. I made a simple bracket out of 1/8" aluminum and share mounting studs with a bracket that holds the large wiring loom near the fire wall.

Pic of line routing. I originally planned to reuse the factory rubber elbow that is on the ventilation valve using a male/male barb to connect the elbow to a hose, but when I turned the elbow to point toward the passenger side it hit the wiring loom holding bracket, so I just went with hose all the way. I used 3/8" transmission oil cooler line from Advance Auto. Great fit on the 9mm barbs on the catch can.

*Note: the big wiring loom is disconnected from the holder brackets only for the photo shoot.

Wow we almost have an identical setup! Same can and everything!

Although I think I'll be re-locating mine.. I find it awkward to empty it.

It is a pain, but i figure you only have to do it once every few thousand miles or so. I was gonna put it on the core support but I'm gonna try to put an aux battery there.

Sorry to wake up this thread. I just found it. I had been looking for my pcv valve and the great pictures from Weldo not only found it for me but pointed me to a great location for the catch can. Thanks. Did anyone install a valve at the bottom of their catch can? It's pretty open below that location on my truck. Looks like I'd be able to put a valve on the bottom attached to some tubing and route the tubing to the bottom of the engine bay to empty every oil change. Thanks all.

Does that can have a baffle and 'scrub pad' collection material? If not, can you open the can to install it?

The can does have a baffle, but no scrub pad material. It's pretty slick though, the baffles consist of a small hollow cylinder with screens at the entrance and exit. The lower baffle unscrews and you can add a piece of stainless scouring pad. That's what I did.

I've also been contemplating moving my can to the core support on the passenger side just to make emptying easier. Really it's not a big deal though, after 5000 miles it only had about 3oz of oil in it, so I only have to empty it like one or twice a year.

Also I added an o ring to the dipstick, just to be sure it sealed up tight.

Thanks Weldo. Just ordered one in blue. Price is now $59. Not too bad. Now I'll make a bracket like yours and be all set.

Why not add a can to the 4 banger, because it's N.A.? I've read where folks are catching oil with it. Even if it's not as useful as for the SC tacos where the pressures are much higher it still can't be good to run that through the engine.

Dang! I think it was $85 when I got mine! There are tons of generic catch cans on ebay but the ADD W1 is the nicest one I've seen. It's worth the money, even at $85.

Heck yes! I just changed my oil after about 5200 miles and there was probably 2-3 fluid ounces of oil in the can! I'd much rather that oil be in my catch can than caked all over my combustion chamber! I firmly believe that adding an oil catch can will offer a significant advantage in keeping your engine clean internally.
