well............. there shouldnt be any oil goin into the secondary air/oil separator. that catch can should be doin that. the secondary air/oil separator is to see if the can is or isnt workin.. but unless you have your lines crossed you might have your can set up wrong. the lines from the back of the engine block go to the can, then to the sec. air/oil separator and then to the front of the block under that thinger

Never even heard of a catch can until hitting on this thread almost by accident. I was skimming the threads ...

Ran into the Oil-Air Vapor Separation Senior Capstone Project being conducted at the Univ of Maine. One of the sponsors is Saikou Michi Co. I think I will buy their Micro OCC model. Completion of the project is Apr 2013.

Someone had posted a link to Saikou Michi - thanks!

    What is a Catch Can?
The catch can has up until now been a second order performance modification for the aftermarket. The catch can is a devise that is placed in the PCV system between the PCV valve and the intake manifold. The catch can gives the oil entrained in the air charge a place to slow down and drop out of the air before it enters the intake manifold. The oil is collected in a reservoir and drained by the operator at suggested service intervals. Currently the design and performance of catch cans are evaluated by the manufacturer and the consumer. There is no standard that the catch can is held to, nor is there public information to the particular performance of a can. The only way cans are publicly evaluated is by the fact that if used some amount of oil is present in the catch can’s reservoir after use. Even if the catch can has oil in it’s reservoir, the issue remains that there’s no way to relate the amount of entrained oil that the can was subjected to. This is where our team hopes to create a standard for quantifying the performance of such systems.
    The Project:
    The Oil-Air Vapor Separation Senior Capstone Project will consist of a complete four-phase engineering project, including low volume production. The four phases are defined as follows;
Phase 1: Concept Initiation- Project Planning
Phase 2: Concept Development- System Requirements and Detailed Design
Phase 3: Functional Prototype Development and Validation
    Phase 4: Production and Warranty
Acceptable completion of this project is defined as having a functioning prototype at the end of Semester 2, including relevant CNC code, machining fixtures, test bench and testing standards in which to manufacture our product by.

Yes im aware of the flow from the block to the intake. I have no baffles in the catch can its a line in and another line out. You can smell the oil when you open the lid on it like its hanging in the air.

The 2ndary one is catching more vecause like you said the primary isnt that effective. Same reason the catch cans with baffles catch so much more.

Yup, decided to go with that model for multiple reasons including customization, ease of draining and sealed design. Very happy with the product and shocked at how much oil I drained out after 5k miles.

So the Micro model is not too small? How much gunk collected after 5k? I keep second guessing what size I should order. I understand cold climates/winter raises the collection amount.

i got my catch can off ebay. its really nice for 20 some odd bucks but it doesnt have a baffle inside. i also had to tighten all the fittings on it. search ebay, they also sell the nice one that splits in half and then you can add some mesh screenin inside

mine looks like this, i added the fuel filter thinger and the fuel lines

Believe me, in the last 24 hours since I've even heard of catch cans, I 've conducted lots of research. I've read numerous forums and checked out many vendors, including eBay. The products from Saikou Michi are highly regarded and are reasonably priced given the perceived quality.

only problem i see with this model is that it's welded together. do the mesh screens need replacing after awhile? i can only imagine how gunky that mesh will get over time.

It is sealed. The mesh sits high in the cannister. I haven't read a problem with their design but I can ask them about it.

Working on it. Never Ending :)
Anyone else have this happen to their catch can, I live in Canada and the past while has been -20 and more. I tried to empty it after driving for 2+ hours and figured it would be warm and not all frozen like the pic (the block of ice I pulled out), should I add some steel wool in there ?
