I've been running the 42 draft designs one for over a year now. I'd say it does a good job and is probably on par with others with a substrate filter.

I'd recommend it if someone had the cash to buy it. It appears that it's now sold with the right sized fittings. I had to custom do my hoses (easier than it sounds).

Read a lot about this. so I ordered one based on what i saw from yellowrubiu.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004K9BIY4/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cost a good bit ($150) but it was really good quality and design.

had to make a custom bracket to mount it but all in all it was really easy to install.

    DSC01979.jpg

After about a 2500 mile trip from East Texas to Colorado including driving up to the top of Pikes Peak.

Since, I had to change my oil when i got back I went ahead and drained the can.

    Thumb is at the level.

I was very very impressed with how it did!! and wow these things burn some oil!!

    Great Mod!! Love it!!

Your engine loves you more. :D

And yes, the PCV system does suck up a lot of oil. You are now saving the environment just a tad more too. ;)

    Looks good too.

Hey guys, I have sold my Tacoma and moved into a Cummins. That being said I have a Moroso Oil Catch Can and custom bracket with hoses that is less than 6 months old. I removed it and the Scan Guage II prior to selling. Anybody interested in purchasing a top notch catch can let me know.

Lots of good info in this thread. I used to always assume catch cans were un-needed, extra bling for most vehicles. My BMW, and most others, use problematic air/oil separators which allow the excess oil pulled from the crankcase to flow back to the dip stick and into the oil pan, in a sense removing most of it from the line on it's way back to the intake manifold. So in my oem application, that oil is recycled back into the system via a dip stick within the dipstick. Plus they have several common points of failure. That doesn't mean it's the best solution, but it is the reason I've never really screwed with catch cans on my car.

To the Canadian's having freezing issues, BMW's fix was adding a layer of foam insulation around the separators and selling them as 'cold weather' specific models. So that, or the addition of a small heater element for metal tanks, could help with that. I think a beer coozy might do the trick ;).

Since Toyota doesn't seem to feel the need to have any form of oil separation on these motors, it's reasonable to get behind the idea of running a catch can as some form of filtering system. After everything I've just read I'll most likely add one on when I end up with a Tacoma of my own soon. Thanks to everyone for their research and to whoever found the Saikou Michi can.

Are oil catch cans useful on engines without super/turbo chargers?

Does anyone have any experiences using a catch can on the 2.7L?

Well my original oil catch can from ebay turned out to be less than stellar. So I pulled it (was constantly leaking) and ordered a "Saikou Michi" #S1-OCC to replace it. I opted for the sight glass and 1/4 turn ball valve options. It arrived today and the construction quality is excellent and the internal design is light years ahead of the ebay model.

I installed it and am very happy with the product. The ball valve will facilitate drainage by allowing a wider opening than my previous needle valve that I used on my old can. I used a 1/4" mpt x 1/4 flare fitting for the drain and ran it out through the fender well for easy access (shown without cap installed). It came with a 1/4 mpt x barb fitting and a piece of clear plastic tubing. I can either use a piece of tubing or an old refrigerant gauge hose that I have for draining. The ball valve even with the wire harness in front of it is still very easy to turn so draining should not be an issue.

So here is the required pR0n....

EBay ones are such crap. Heard the question asked too many times about "why would you spend so much on a catch can?" Because of those exact reasons you said. This one looks so much better.

mine leaks so bad  got mine just before the general knowledge of catch cans hit TW, so i had no idea what differentiated a good one from a bad one. I don't know if it's ebay, but it's bad, whatever it is.

Depending on how yours is setup, that can cause a vacuum leak. Oooooooor, the leaking oil prevents the vacuum leak.

My turbo does the same. It 'aggressively seeps' boost into the engine.
