Saves having to take apart the throttle body and cleaning out the air manifold. Took mine apart and found a mess, and from what i can tell its all from the pcvs.IMG_20180126_213521.jpg This leads to this. IMG_20180126_190345.jpg
Which obviously leads to decreased performance.. Oil catch may not be required, but if it saves a time consuming job of scrubbing out the TB and air manifolds, like.. why not?
Im up to my elbows in this, and didn't go through this whole thread, but I assume folks are doing 2 catch cans. one on the driver side,15170286503457857215426429277966.jpg and one on the pass side, which leads up the the air intake pre-throttle body and contributes greatly to build-up on the valve...? IMG_20180126_213537.jpg
I haven't done my research and don't know the cost, but if its not foolishly expensive to add these in I imagine I'll add this my list of mods.

Edit: Crankcase ventilation hose(on the passenger side) takes air from the intake and brings it into the crankcase to displace the air that the pcv valve is removing (on the drivers side, where people put the catch can).. If you have oil coming into the intake pre TB like in my photos, it probably means your pcv valve is shot and needs cleaning or replacing. You may disregard the above.

Has anyone sent in their "catch" to like Black Stone Labs to be inspected so we actually know what people are catching with these things?

That throttle body is nasty. I am pretty sure that the PCV dumps into the intake manifold, which is downstream of the TB. Which means the TB should be passing clean air only. Not sure how your TB got so bad but I would look into that.

Finally got around to installing my catch can. Didn't have any room by the fuse box; so, placed it in gap in front of the battery.

So the catch can I'm looking at buying has 3/4" hose barbs for the inlet. How would I best go about converting my line up to such a large diameter? Or would I be better off just looking into a different can?

@Naumoff42 You'll need a hose reducer. Look up Eldon James C12-6BN on Amazon; it's a 3/4 to 3/8 hose reducer. Then, you'll need a short 3/4 rubber hose; ideally you want a transmission/oil rubber line for the inlet. Clear vinyl may do, but avoid coolant hose as it is not designed for oils.

But, why buy one with such large hose connectors?

My friend works for a German performance part supplier and can get me their in house model for pretty cheap. Has nice baffles as well.

I just posted the link as an example because I knew the size I used, the link was for a pack of 10, so $12 each there.

That was the type of barb I bought but mine was under $10 each if I remember correctly. In my files I have the total cost I put into everything for the Ranger for the catch can and it was right at $100, I didn't log individual prices.

I opened the can on the Ranger last weekend and it was about half full of water, just oily water, no milkshake emulsion like the Tacoma has done.

Any good Hardware store should be able to provide the proper fitting to adapt the catch can to the correct hose size. If not then try a business that makes and sells hyd hoses, they have tons of options.

Aren’t you concerned about condensation build up and freezing inside the can, when not in use?
I’ve been contemplating the same mod, but saw a post where someone found chunks of ice that clogged up his OCC .

At first it was a concern but I rolled the dice and so far so good .It's been around lows of -10F and highs of 15F and I've had no issues. I still am weary about it though so this weekend I'm going to insulate the lines to it and wrap adhesive insulation wrap around the can itself.
