I’m not saying they are not reliable either. Just LESS reliable than the 4 banger based on all the shit they tied to the engine. :D

Welcome to the modern age! Look around, everything has more complexity, even a fridge! With internet!

6 injectors were added for durability, they are used for cleaning the intake valves from dust and debris that still gets into the system and collects there. These injectors have a proven track record. My 31 year old motorhome with the same style injectors is still running strong with no replacement or issue.

    Edited for clarity

I used to bitch about modern cars and technology. Our V6 Tacomas rival a 1970 GTO for acceleration and 1/4 mile times, but do it with 9" of ground clearance, off road tires, a bed on the back 2x the gas mileage and 4x the lifespan.

Sounds like a lot of conjecture.

By that logic it's better to have one leg than two. Sure you'd give up some efficiency, but less parts means less chance for failure.

'Tacoma shin' next or 'Will 385's fit with no lift', maybe something new, 'Everytime I pass someone a light, lights up on my mirror! What's that warning light for?'

They over complicated the engine to eek out marginal gains in fuel efficiency, it definitely shows on a typical 3rd gen home page. The HPFP has always been an issue, and if I’m not mistaken, theres a recall in the works for the other.
No no no. You’re looking at it wrong. 2 legs is the STANDARD. This engine would be like adding 3 more legs for a total of 5. 2 legs to propel you forward slowly, 2 legs to propel you faster, and one leg to hold a whisk for the pancake batter.

Didn't the 1st and 2nd gen also have recalls?

I’d be curious to see the final numbers on engine related tomfoolery between gen 1/2/3 v6 engines. I’m gonna leave the 4 out of it, just to be fair.

I am thinking maybe a true catch can to solve all these problems of the internal combustion engine. If I get some barrels like pictured below and use then to catch all the condensation that is already in the air that the engine sucks in, then the engine might last forever. There would be no need for oil changes anymore, it would be so clean you would be able to drink it. Who will buy a system once I get all the kinks worked out! I bet the system will double the torques!

I absolutely took some creative liberties there. Really though, there is not nearly enough data to suggest the 3.5 is more or less reliable than the 2.7, which has been in tacos since, what, 1995 and hasn't changed since. I think it is a moot point because obviously, frame corrosion is typically the life ending issue.

Big picture though, there is no "standard." I bet model T drivers thought that driver controlled ignition advance was the only way to go, and anything else is going to be the ruin of the automobile.

If we still had just the basic ICE without the pollution control systems none of us would be meeting in the +50 thread. I like the system the 3.5 has for direct injection and valve cleaning. Direct Injection without this is a nightmare. Ask any Chevy Cruze owner who had valve train issues. Or BMW/Mini owners. It was a dumb move to do it without upstream valve cleaning. This also make the engine about 4% more efficient on the burn from what i I have read. This is a big advancement. I do believe a catch can is not a bad idea as the oil getting burnt in the cylinders and then heading to the cat has properties that negatively effect the cat. In an engine with only direct injection a catch can helps keep the oil from building up residue on the intake valve.

Some of you fuckers can't even change your oil every 5k despite driving in "extreme" conditions. The last thing you need is a catch can. There will be no gram points or horsepower awarded for a fucking catch can.

I'm sure if someone said they gained 30 HP by running two stroke gas they'd do it.

Frame corrosion is not a problem for me in my salt state. Because I haz the science

some of them can’t even drain their engine oil without first draining their tranny...

That’s not entirely on them though :D Toyota made it very easy to fuck that up.

Toyota groupthink has sent bilstein 5100 sales into the fucking stratosphere. Let me get in on that ballon, there’s room for one more.

They are such a marginal upgrade, I can’t see how they are so recommended. I don’t get it. If you play in the dirt, save your money for something rebuildable. Otherwise rock the stock, they aren’t that bad.

I’m not “anti-progress”, I’m just pro “keep it as simple as possible so it lasts the longest”. That’s why I buy Toyota pickups in the first place.
