Just follow the engineers gospel in the manual . Oh and be sure to follow the engineers advice on cleaning and care in the manual also .

    "NOTICE
■To prevent paint deterioration and corrosion on the body and components
    (aluminum wheels, etc.)
Wash the vehicle immediately in the following cases:
    • After driving near the sea coast
    • After driving on salted roads
    • If coal tar or tree sap is present on the paint surface
    • If dead insects, insect droppings or bird droppings are present on the
    paint surface
    • After driving in an area contaminated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust,
    iron powder or chemical substances
    • If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled with dust or mud
    • If liquids such as benzene and gasoline are spilled on the paint surface
●If the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately.
●To prevent the wheels from corroding, remove any dirt and store in a place
with low humidity when storing the wheels."

Note this all must be done IMMEDIATELY !!!~!! , I wonder why ?
Also it does not say anything about using Krown or Fluid film or any other under coating rust preventers as they must not be needed . Anyone doing this is a fool for not just trusting the engineers and only doing what is written in the Bible , I mean the Owners manual .

Are all you guys on the coasts washing your trucks once at work and then again once home before storing your truck for the night in a low humidity place , EACH and EVERY day ? Does everyone stop and wash the truck each time a bug hits the hood ?

All kidding aside , I think the manual was written by the Toyota -insurance ( warranty) actuaries and lawyers .
If someone wants to do a little extra to protect there truck , there is no reason to belittle them .

    End of rant !

Firstly, it says to wash after driving on salted roads. If you did that every time, you wouldnt need undercoating or rust proofing.

Second, the users of Fluid Film/Krown/Etc can provide proof that they are making a difference. Take a truck ten years old that has never been rustproofed and it has rust. Take a truck that has always been rustproofed and it has no rust.

Take a truck that has its oil changed every 5,000 miles and it will still be running at 200,000 miles. Take a truck that had its oil changed per Toyotas spec and it will still be running at 200,000 miles.

When your argument is based entirely on "feels", and no tangible proof, then you deserve belittling. Sorry if that hurts your feels!

Your logic and your post are contradictory.

You should be an advocate of changing the oil less often rather than more if the manual was written by actuaries and lawyers.

I was being facetious about following the manual because Toyota only has to have the engine last 60 K miles so they are certain 10K oil changes are enough and are meeting federal mandates + what ever they have factored in as a cushion . They also know that if they , along with all other car manufactures have written the maint care and whatever else , to stop rust etc. impossible to follow , it will most always be the owners fault if something goes wrong before the warranty coverage stops . I chose the car washing because it is obvious it is impossible to adhere to . So I guess we are to take what is written in the manual with a dose on common sense because all they are worried about is the bottom line . Look at all the positive news about the latest ECU updates but it is like pulling teeth to have them do it . One would think they would be using it as a positive news item but they are not !In this day in age as in the past ,it is always a good idea for people to think for themselves .
Again common sense is to use underbody rust preventative if you feel it is needed . Change oil if you feel you need it . Wash it if you feel it needs it . Employed engineers , lawyers , and everybody else has to do and say what they are told unless they own a private company, or firm , then it is only the Governments they fear .
So to pick and choose from the manual as to what is iron clad and what is not is up to each of us.

I have been part of many manual writing parties. Believe it or not everything in there is in there for a reason, be it information, to limit liability or teach. People actually do make decisions what goes and stays in the manual and its a team made up from all disciplines.

This is my point to the tee and I am sure you know the different members of the groups did not always agree what you said was the gospel ! I agree there is a reason ,all is a give and take , I feel it is not written for the customer for a ever lasting product , but for consensus of the team of lawyers , bean counters and engineers , warranty and legalities . One cannot with absolute surety , pick and choose how and why the recommendations were chosen . But do you really think they were agreed upon for the customer or the company ?

It must be a universal conspiracy then because every vehicle I've owned that uses full synthetic from Mercedes to Toyota agrees on a 10k interval.

I don't know why I am so timid to wait 10k miles. I know in my mind that everything will be fine, but I am just stuck in my old ways.

Both. The customer needs information on their product. The company needs to indemnify themselves against stupidity while offering, in good faith, some type of sales concession (warranty) that they stand behind their product for a time period.
The manual would be useless for 90% of the population if the engineers wrote the whole thing. Neither legal or accounting could write the manual on their own.
Bottom line, our truck is a fair product at a fair price, as evidenced by the public demand. The manual describes, clearly, the operation of all pertinent parts and systems of the truck and maintenance requirements. It also clearly gives the contact information necessary in case of a problem. I don't know what more you would need in a manual. Oh, I think it's written at about a 4th grade level so everyone can understand it lol.

One last thing... the vehicle was designed to meet a specific group of customers expectations. For example, 10K OCI. Their customers expect intervals to be generally the same as other vehicles in this classification. Toyota could, without a doubt, change the components and bump the OCI up to 50K miles. However, the customer is not expecting that nor is the customer prepared to pay $100 for a high capacity remote mounted dual cannister filter either. The manual, and the truck, reflect customer expectations.

My point in against the oil manufacturers. If Blacktone could not detect 8 year old oil , and was good for another 3000miles , who is lying , or what is an untruth as far as engine oil ? Miles per change ?
Does J ay Leno have his cars change the oil in every car every 3 months ?
